The Orchestra

Oakville Symphony Youth Orchestra (OSYO) is a community-driven organization that

inspires young musicians to achieve excellence through a love of music. With four

music ensembles, the OSYO welcomes young musicians to a progressive orchestral

experience that ignites, encourages, and enriches a love of music.

OSYO evolved from the merger of Halton Youth Symphony and the Mississauga Youth

Orchestra and is now directly affiliated with the prestigious Oakville Symphony. Our pre
- pandemic membership comprised of about 200 young musicians every season.

Through the pandemic, OSYO continued to offer virtual rehearsals and concerts and

won the distinction of being one of the few youth orchestras to do so in the province.

Re-alignment of focus and organizational structure of the OSYO has created an exciting

opportunity for a General Manager (GM) to share our vision and participate in the

mission.

Commitment: Though variable through the season, we expect this opportunity to

involve about 10 to 20 hours a week of time commitment.

Accountability: The GM will be accountable for successful leadership and

management of the OSYO and execute the strategic direction set by the OSYO Board

of Directors.

Leadership
- Participate with the Board in developing the vision and strategic plan to guide the

OSYO
- Be the main parent liaison for the OSYO in correspondence and in-person
- Conduct and manage official and prompt correspondence on behalf of the Board
- Represent the OSYO at community activities to enhance its profile
- Represent the OSYO in discussions with potential affiliates, partners, sponsors,

etc.
- Assist the Board in identification of potential sponsors, funders, and/or

advertisers
- Regularly report to the Board on strategic activities

Operational planning and management
- Develop an operational plan prior to the start of season in September in each

year. Operation plan should include programming, dates, retreat plan, concert

plan, funding objectives, etc.
- Ensure prompt collection of registration fees
- Coordinate the execution of the newsletters as a communication tool to the

OSYO community

- Provide support to the Board by preparing meeting agendas and supporting

materials

Human resources planning and management
- Determine staffing requirements when required (e.g. volunteer and paid) for

OSYO program delivery
- Recruit, interview and select staff/volunteers that have the right technical and

personal abilities to help further the OSYO mission
- Actively work with and support Conductors on rehearsal, retreat, and concert

planning activities
- Manage all rehearsal, retreat, and concert activities - venue selection, contracts,

tickets, equipment delivery etc.

Financial planning and management
- Work with staff and the Board (Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive

budget
- Work with the Board to secure sufficient funding for the operation of the OSYO
- Provide the Board with regular reports (upon request or quarterly at a minimum)

on the revenues and expenditures of the OSYO (in collaboration with the OSYO

Treasurer)
- Ensure the OSYO, in collaboration with the Board, meets reporting requirements

within prescribed deadlines (e.g., charity status, funder reports, grant

requirements)

Risk Management
- Identify and evaluate the risks to the OSYO people (musicians, parents, staff,

management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and

implement measures to control risks

Online Marketing (including social media)
- The OSYO website is expected to be our primary vehicle to convey the

operational aspects of our orchestra, and all our efforts should be to keep it

current and updated. The GM will be responsible for content development and

maintenance of the OSYO website
- The GM is also responsible for carrying out similar tasks with other social media

outlets such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

within community

- Project management skills: Experience in developing procedures for weekly

rehearsals and concert operations
- Available Tuesday evenings, weekends, evenings and occasional time in the

summer for planning and events
- Familiar with virtual meeting platforms (i.e. zoom, google meets), social media

(Facebook, twitter, Instagram), website (WordPress)
- Preferred prior experience working with youth clubs
- Required: Vulnerable sector check, Up-to-date vaccinations

**Job Types**: Part-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months

Pay: $2,000.00-$2,100.00 per month

Expected hours: 4 - 20 per week
