Mental Health Educator

**Southeast Collegiate** is the only school of its kind in all of Canada It serves as a campus to **First Nations students **during the school year - educating students in a beautiful school facility and providing housing in the adjoining lodge. Since 1995, SEC has proudly watched over 500 students graduate from its halls.
In 2019, **Southeast Collegiate** officially welcomed students into its new, state-of-the-art school in Winnipeg, Manitoba - just a few steps away from its original home. The new school can accept up to 156 First Nations youth from communities throughout Manitoba looking for the best opportunity to graduate high school.
Southeast Collegiate is seeking an experienced and compassionate **Mental Health Educator & Crisis Support person **to join our Mental Health Department for the September 2024 to June 2025 school year.
**Job Overview**
The **Mental Health Educator & Crisis Support** person is responsible for providing mental health education, prevention, and crisis intervention to students. The role involves designing and facilitating workshops, developing educational materials, and responding to students in crisis. This person will work in collaboration with counseling services, faculty, and student organizations to promote student well-being, resilience, and mental health awareness.

**Key Responsibilities**:
➣ **Mental Health Education**:
- Develop and deliver workshops, webinars, and seminars on topics related to mental health (stress management, anxiety, depression, mindfulness, etc.).
- Create educational materials, such as handouts, brochures, and online resources, aimed at enhancing students' mental health literacy.
- Collaborate with faculty and Administration to integrate mental health education into broader student wellness initiatives.
➣ **Crisis Support and Intervention**:
- Provide immediate support and guidance to students in crisis (e.g., suicidal ideation, panic attacks, emotional distress) through direct intervention, including de-escalation techniques.
- Assist students in accessing appropriate mental health services, including on-campus counseling, external resources
- Maintain calm and compassionate communication during crisis situations, ensuring students feel supported and safe.
➣ **Collaboration and Outreach**:
- Collaborate closely with the Mental Health Department team.
- Partner with faculty, staff, and student organizations to foster a supportive mental health environment at SEC
- Promote and coordinate mental health awareness events, campaigns, and activities.
➣ **Assessment and Reporting**:
- Maintain accurate records of crisis interventions
- Follow-up with MH Navigator to arrange necessary supports.
- Analyze trends (keep stats) in student mental health needs and provide recommendations for program improvements.
- Contribute to ongoing evaluations of mental health services and educational programming on campus.
**Qualifications**:
➣ **Education**:
- Recognized Counselling Certification from accredited institution, Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, Psychiatric Nursing, or a related field
- Presentation skills
- Crisis intervention
- Trauma-informed care
- Mental Health Training, NVCI, CPR or willingness to become certified
➣ **Experience**:
- Experience working with Indigenous youth.
- Culturally informed and knowledgeable about Indigenous cultures.
- 2+ years of experience in mental health education, crisis support, or related roles.
- Experience working in an educational environment is an asset
➣ **Skills**:
- Strong knowledge of mental health challenges faced by youth, including anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma.
- Utilization of PowerPoint
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills for delivering educational content to groups.
- Ability to stay calm under pressure and manage crisis situations effectively.
- Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental attitude.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Cultural sensitivity, respect, and a commitment to fostering inclusive practices in the workplace.
➣ **Required**:
- Clear Current Child Abuse Registry and Criminal Record Check
**Employees with treaty status under the Indian Act are exempt from federal income tax at SEC.**

Pay: $28.37-$33.60 per hour
