Under the supervision of the Chrysalis House Team Manager, and participating as part of a team, the Shelter Program Worker provides immediate and responsive crisis support to abused women and their children at Chrysalis House, in accordance with the WOCRC Vision, Mission, and the Health Equity and Inclusion lens. Participation in and promotion of cooperative living is a component of this position.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Provide Direct Service by
- Assessing requests for residential shelter services according to Chrysalis House policies and procedures, ensuring alternatives are found if Chrysalis House services are not appropriate;
- Providing crisis intervention, through telephone and personal contact with abused women and their children;
- Assessing level of risk and executing emergency measures as necessary;
- Conducting intake and discharge process for all residents;
- Ensuring that all health, medical and safety needs of residents are attended to;
- Ensuring the effective day-to-day operation of services at Chrysalis House; including but not limited to: answering the crisis, business and donation lines, answering the door, accepting donations etc.
- Ensuring the general cleanliness of Chrysalis House, including, but not limited to, transitioning rooms and supporting residents to participate in household responsibilities;
- Assisting residents of Chrysalis House with cooperative living guidelines, including resident mediation and conflict resolution
- Being responsive to immediate needs of residents such as: getting their medications, access to food supplies, bus tickets etc.
- Checking in with residents on each shift
- Ensuring all safety and security procedures are followed;
- Ensuring that service is accessible to all women, by accessing communication and interpretive services as requested;
- Acting as staff resource person to Peer Supporters as needed;
- Providing opportunity for and facilitating peer support among residents.
**Advocate on behalf of abused women and their children by**:
- Advocating for the needs of abused women and children, as required;
- Promoting participation of women in activities designed to educate and/or advocate for prevention.
- Promoting participation of clients in activities designed to education and/or advocate for prevention of violence against women
Ensure coordination of policy and service by
- Collaborating with the Child & Youth Counselor, Family Support Counselor, and Case Managers
- Maintaining accurate and up to date client records
- Utilizing internal communication mechanisms such as the Log Book, Shift Change binder etc.
- Completion of Chrysalis House shift change when arriving/leaving shift;
- Participating as a Chrysalis House team member meetings & work plan days
- Assuming tasks that facilitate smooth operations of the shelter as defined by the Staff Responsibilities List
- Facilitation of the bi-weekly residents’ meeting
- Completing evening/overnight/weekend checklists; including any household tasks as assigned by the Food and House Care Worker
Ensure evaluation of service
- Participating in WOCRC evaluation process.
- Preparing and maintaining all necessary documentation and statistics on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
**Hours of work**
The hours of work are 12.25 hours shifts on a day and overnight rotational basis
Are reflective of a 24/7 operation
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
- Social Service Workers Diploma or equivalent in experience, education and training;
- Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of community-based model of intervention and feminist principles;
- Knowledge of Violence Against Women issues;
- Demonstrated crisis intervention skills;
- Proven conflict resolution skills;
- Experience working with volunteers;
- Proven ability to work independently, and within a team approach;
- Strong communication skills;
- Multitasking abilities;
- Demonstrated ability to identify and serve the needs of diverse communities.
**Language**
- Ability to communicate fluently in English, spoken and written;
- Additional language abilities an asset.
Computer Competencies
- Word processing - Basic.
- Program Worker
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends and overnights.
