**Position Summary**

The Shelter Program Worker provides immediate and responsive crisis support to abused women and their children at Chrysalis House, in accordance with the WOCRC Vision, Mission, and the Health Equity and Inclusion lens. Participation in, and promotion of, cooperative living is a component of this position.

**Principal Duties and Responsibilities**

**Provide Direct Service**:

- Assess requests for residential shelter services according to Chrysalis House (CH) policies and procedures, ensure alternatives are found if CH services are not appropriate;
- Provide crisis intervention through telephone and personal contact with abused women and their children;
- Assess level of risk and execute emergency measures as necessary;
- Conduct intake and discharge processes for all residents;
- Ensure that all health, medical and safety needs of residents are attended to;
- Ensure effective day-to-day operation of services at CH; including but not limited to: answering crisis, business and donation lines, answering the door and accepting donations;
- Ensure the general cleanliness of CH including, but not limited to, transitioning rooms and supporting residents to participate in household responsibilities;
- Check-in with residents on each shift.

**Advocacy on Behalf of Abused Women and Their Children**:

- Advocate for the needs of abused women and children as required;
- Promote participation of women in activities designed to educate and/or advocate for prevention of violence against women.

**Ensure Coordination of Policy and Service**:

- Collaborate with the Child & Youth Counsellor, Family Support Counsellor and Case Managers;
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records;
- Utilize internal communication mechanisms such as the Log Book, Shift Change binder, etc.
- Complete CH shift change when arriving/departing;
- Complete evening/overnight/weekend checklists including any household tasks as assigned by the Food and House Care Worker.

**Knowledge, Experience and Skills**
- Social Service Worker diploma or equivalent in experience, education and training;
- Demonstrated commitment to, and knowledge of, community-based model of intervention and feminist principles;
- Knowledge of _Violence Against Women _issues;
- Demonstrated crisis intervention skills;
- Proven conflict resolution skills;
- Experience working with volunteers;
- Proven ability to work independently, and within a team approach;
- Strong communication skills;
- Multi-tasking abilities;
- Demonstrated ability to identify and serve the needs of diverse communities.

**Hours of Work**:

- The hours of work are 12.25 hour shifts on a day and overnight rotational basis;
- Hours are reflective of a 24/7 operation;
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends and overnights.
