The salary range for this position will be $181,211 - $225,815 per annum.

Under the direction of the Tribunal Chair, the Tribunal General Counsel will manage and provide leadership to the Tribunal Counsel Office (“TCO”) in the delivery of legal support to the entire organization in order to fulfill its mandate to provide quality adjudication in workplace safety and insurance appeals on a fair and timely basis.

**What can I expect to do in this role?**:
**Management of TCO**
- Establishes, leads and directs a collaborative team of lawyers, law students, and administrative staff responsible for the operation of the TCO in accordance with professional standards, WSIAT internal policies/procedures, legislation and regulations. This involves recruitment, orientation, performance evaluation, planning, organizing and coordinating the priorities and activities of the department, determining deadlines and performance goals.
- Oversees the work of the TCO, including all appeals and other matters handled by TCO staff.
- Meets regularly with TCO staff in order to encourage independent work by staff and fostering teamwork and cooperation.
- Provides support with respect to medical issues arising in appeals, reviewing Medical Discussion Papers and providing general direction regarding appeal and non-appeal-related issues.
- Provides leadership in fostering a positive and healthy workplace culture across the TCO with an emphasis on service delivery.

**Provide Expert Legal Advice**
- Provides guidance and legal advice to TCO lawyers in order to ensure high quality submissions and advocacy, including reviewing all written submissions of TCO lawyers for accuracy and clarity. Appeals handled by TCO tend to be complex or high profile and involve new or novel considerations of law, multiple parties or stakeholders, or that have significant public interest.
- Provides legal advice and assistance to staff on legal and procedural issues with respect to all aspects of appeal processes.
- Provides legal advice and assistance with respect to non-appeal related issues including contracts/procurement, HR and administration, finance, tax and IT.
- Provides legal advice and guidance to the OICs with respect to general appeal-related issues such as procedural or substantive issues.
- Participates in Tribunal hearings to make oral or written submissions in complex appeals on legal and procedural issues.
- Provides legal advice and assistance to the Tribunal Chair with respect to general and specific Tribunal issues.
- Identifies issues that pose risk and/or require organizational review or revision.

**Litigation**
- Develops strategies and positions with respect to all litigation.
- Individually handles or oversees all aspects of the judicial review or litigation process for the Tribunal, including the preparation of materials and attending hearings before administrative tribunals, such as the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and the courts, such as the Ontario Divisional Court, Ontario Superior Court, Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
- Supervises and coordinates with external counsel as necessary with respect to judicial review and litigation activities.
- Coordinates with external agencies as necessary with respect to judicial review and litigation activities.

**Tribunal Administration**
- Utilizes knowledge and insight from internal legal interactions to identify organizational issues that should be addressed at a corporate level and provides legal and strategic advice to address these issues.
- Monitors and ensures compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, directives and such other governmental policies as may be introduced or amended, and/or provide advice to the Chair and Chair's Office staff to maintain compliance.
- Monitors external developments, such as legislative or policy changes, and considers whether Tribunal action is required. Provides legal and strategic advice with respect to organizational response for both appeal-related and non-appeal related issues.
- Participates in Tribunal senior management committees.
- Participates in Tribunal committees or assigns TCO staff to committees as required.
- Participates in internal Tribunal professional develop
