WLIC offers a pathway to an undergraduate degree at Wilfrid Laurier University. The WLIC UTP Stage 1 Instructor is responsible for providing high quality teaching and student support within the Stage 1 Program. The program offers courses in a wide variety of areas, including Business and Management, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Philosophy, Social Studies, Writing, Computing, and Interdisciplinary

Studies.

The main responsibilities include ensuring the quality of the curriculum and that the content being delivered in and outside of the classroom, including university life skills, meets the academic rigour required to progress to UTP Stage II.

The instructor will work closely with Associate Director, Student and Academic Success to coordinate with Laurier resources (library, interfaith, security), to ensure the program is meeting the needs of students. Detailed knowledge of WLIC College support programs and philosophy and student life cycle is required. **Course Overview**

**PHL120: Intro to Philosophical Thinking**

This course is an introduction philosophical reasoning and explores the basics of rational argumentation, truth, and logic, including understanding someone else’s argument, judging whether the argument has a proper logical structure or not, and forming a positive or negative overall appraisal of an argument. This course also examines several diverse philosophical topics, including ethical issues such as international aid (how much charity should rich people give to poor people?), issues about the nature of reality (are ghosts and spirits real?) and issues about what we can know (could you know if you were really inside The Matrix right now?). This course does not presuppose any previous training in formal logic.

**Essential Skills, Knowledge, & Experience**
- Professional experience in a relevant discipline area
- Demonstrated ability and experience in delivery of classes within a post-secondary teaching environment
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and meet agreed outcomes
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, in the English language
- Empathetic approach to the instructional needs and concerns of students

**Desirable Skills & Experience**
- Degree or certificate in the professional practice of teaching and learning
- Exposure to the academic needs and requirements of international students
- Experience in a multicultural environment and strong intercultural competencies

**Responsibilities**

The main responsibilities of this role include but not limited preparing and presenting lessons (4 contact hours per week), tutorials, & workshops in an English-only format on academic and life skills creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students, constructing, and marking appropriate assessment instruments, offering positive feedback, as well as areas for improvement when grading assignments, and recommending a final grade for the course. Courses may be delivered in-person, online, or in a hybrid format.
