**Position Summary**

The WLIC Chemistry Lab Technical Support member is responsible for assisting the WLIC chemistry lab instructors in order to ensure that the WLIC chemistry labs operate efficiently and effectively and are aligned to the lab support practices of the WLU chemistry courses, to ensure equivalent experiences for WLIC and WLU students. The incumbent is responsible for preparing solutions (solutions and quantities vary by experiment, prepared from solids or by dilution) in advance of the WLIC chemistry labs, lab set up for each experiment (setting up stations, equipment and glassware), cleaning up the laboratory after the labs have completed (ensure stations, balances, benches and glassware are clean, hazardous substances/waste properly stored) and other responsibilities.

The WLIC Chemistry Lab Technical Support member will report to the Senior Administrative Officer, FHSS and the WLIC Course Instructor with day-to-day direction provided by the WLU Lab Coordinator.

This position is based at the Brantford Campus. The incumbent will be required to have regular interpersonal interactions and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo Campus, the Brantford Campus, and external partners. Special attention is given to ensure equitable service delivery across all locations.

**Accountabilities**

**Laboratory Safety**
- In cooperation with the Lab Coordinator and SHERM, follow safety precautions while handling chemicals according to the Laboratory Safety Guidelines.
- Work in collaboration with the Lab Coordinator (Health Studies)
- Identify and report any issues and deficiencies to the Lab Coordinator.

**Lab Content**
- Assists, when necessary, Lab Coordinator and Course Instructor in the design and preparation of lab content to support CH110/CH111 labs.

**Lab Technical Support**
- Prepare reagents, solutions, glassware, equipment and other required materials for each laboratory exercise according to Lab Safety guidelines and the material SDSs.
- Conduct setup/takedown of stations for each lab exercise.
- Ensure proper storage and disposal of the chemicals and solutions after each lab.
- Prepare hazardous waste for disposal according to SHERM practices.
- Ensures the teaching lab (benches, glassware/equipment) and PREP room are cleaned afterward.

**Qualifications**- Minimum MSc degree in Chemistry or related field.- Well-developed organizational skills to ensure that labs are prepared, delivered, and administered each week consist with the department’s demanding course schedule; skill in advance planning, scheduling and organizing of time, resources, and materials.
- Communicate, interact effectively and follow the direction of the Lab Coordinator and Course Instructor.
- Must be able to work independently and have great attention to detail
- Experience with standard chemistry laboratory equipment, handling chemicals and preparation of chemical solutions

**Hours of Work**

The normal hours of work are 8 hours (biweekly) from Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required including evening hours to accommodate lab sessions. 48 hours total of work per semester. Fall lab times are Wednesday 1:30-5:30pm.
