The Occupational Health & Safety Specialist will report to the General Manager and will assist in implementing companywide occupational safety programs as well as management of the site-specific requirements of the Health and Safety program. The Occupational Health & Safety Specialist will ensure the work environment is compliant with all health and safety regulations, report safety violations, recommend changes to work conditions and procedures, and will analyze the work environment for any unsafe work procedures and hazards.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Ensure compliance by all western provinces management, supervisors, employees, and sub/contractors in accordance with provincial and other applicable regulatory and company requirements;
- Maintain awareness of amendments of pertinent federal and provincial Occupational Health and Safety regulations, policies and changes to the and make recommendations for their implementation;
- Perform job site safety compliance inspections (planned and unplanned) and risk assessments to identify and address unsafe conditions or hazards in the workplace; report findings as required in a timely manner;
- Assist in the planning, design, development, implementation and evaluation of departmental and organizational occupational safety programs;
- Assist the General Manager and other stakeholders in preparing and maintaining a budget;
- Research occupational safety information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize workplace hazards;
- Lead and/or participate on teams with safety, technical, management, and other team members;
- Research, plan, create and conduct health and safety training and communication for site management and staff using internal and external resources; facilitate seminars with regard to WHMIS, Fall Protection, Orientation, Personal Protection Equipment, CPR/First Aid, industry specific related issues, etc.;
- Ensure the timely completion of accident/injury reporting to designated management;
- Anticipate and identify health & safety concerns and hazards by surveying environmental, operational and occupational conditions; investigate violations & recommend preventative programs;
- Assist in coordinating the activities of other occupational safety personnel within one or more facilities and departments as required;
- Periodically act as a team leader to special task forces or teams;
- Provide direction and/or guidance to safety personnel and staff on occupational safety issues;
- Assist in leading incident investigations, identifying root causes and assisting in the development of meaningful corrective actions; and
- Perform additional tasks and assignments as directed.

WHAT YOU BRING:

- Relevant Safety Certifications (e.g. OHS);
- Degree or diploma in a related field i.e. HSE or OHS;
- Safety training (e.g. CRSP, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information, MSDA) is considered a strong asset;
- First-aid training and certification
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of safety policies and procedures and site rules; extensive knowledge and understanding of the OHSA and worker’s compensation legislation;
- Strong and engaging presentation skills with exceptional communication, facilitation & training skills;
- Analytical and strategic skills to enable the evaluation of best practice approaches to the design and implementation of health & safety programs and to contribute to the development and achievement of the Company’s objectives;
- Physical ability to lift 25lbs and manual dexterity; and

You are an EXCELLENT COMMUNICATOR who is able to effectively present information and respond to questions accordingly, both verbally and in writing.

You are COLLABORATIVE and able to work with a broad range of people and personalities.

You are HIGHLY ORGANIZED with effective time management skills, and able to work autonomously and prioritize workloads to meet key deadlines.

YOUR EXPERIENCE:

- 3-5 years’ experience in occupational health and safety, preferably in an industrial, pharmaceutical, manufacturing environment;
- Previous experience developing training materials and conducting presentations;
- Experience working in a highly regulated industry strongly preferred; and
- Demonstrated experience providing guidance to senior managers regarding occupational health and safety compliance.
