The Biology Department at the University of Winnipeg offers courses that cover a wide variety of biological disciplines. The Department includes 9 teaching labs, 3 prep labs, several research labs, a greenhouse, herbarium and has a close association with the Vivarium.

**Responsibilities**:

- Responsible for lab preparation and set-up/disassembly:

- Compile lab supply orders for materials.
- Neutralize formaldehyde-preserved animal specimens.
- Ensure equipment and materials are stocked for each lab.
- Assists the Microbiology Technologist with lab preparation and set-up/disassembly:

- Work, train and comply with a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory (GOC PHAC license, permits and guidelines). This involves working with biohazard organisms.
- Prepares specialized growth media, stains, and reagents.
- Maintain bacterial and fungal cultures using aseptic techniques.
- Operate specialized equipment.
- Document and update procedures and processes.
- Refer to course lab manual to determine experiment set-up and set or prepare experiment materials before each lab.
- Assists the Greenhouse Technologist with lab preparation and set-up/disassembly:

- Planting/transplanting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, and implementing pest control.
- Assists with lab set ups.
- Assists in Centennial Greenhouse.
- Maintains and annually inventories the skeletal, preserved animal specimen, and microscope slide collections, making repairs when needed. Also processes animal carcasses and tissue for integration into the collection.
- Updates the chemical and equipment inventories.
- Performs general maintenance and calibrations for the equipment present in the assigned lab.
- Ensures the cleanliness and safety of the lab and initiates repair tickets when required.
- Q-reserve booking for autoclaves and analytical equipment.
- Ensures the safety data sheets (SDS) of chemicals are up-to-date.
- Prepares and updates Risk Assessment (JHA), Critical Job Inventory, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and Safe Work Procedures (SWP) documents for assigned labs and preparation areas.
- Participates in lab safety inspections.
- Meets with faculty/instructors to discuss and refine upcoming teaching labs, completes testing to ensure the experiment will work in student lab setting.
- Works with instructors to revamp experimental design
- Proposes improvements to existing lab procedures/exercises and researches alternative materials, chemicals equipment, or techniques.
- Instructs students and research assistants on the proper use of equipment.
- Ensures students comply with current Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) biosafety guidelines and Globally Harmonized System (GHS) - Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), and ensures proper personal protection equipment (PPE) is available.
- Provides instruction and assistance to lab assistants.
- Acts as a resource to faculty and other technical staff with regards to evaluation of equipment for purchase, methodology, trouble shooting.
- Compiles and submits orders to the Lab Manager.
- Tracks orders, reviews requisitions/packing slips for completion and updates department files.
- Prepares Payment Vouchers submits for processing, prepares Return of Goods form and Asset Disposal forms.
- Participates in technical staff meetings.
- Assists in preparing greenhouse for community outreach projects.

**Qualifications**:

- Undergraduate degree or diploma in biological sciences - relevant disciplines would include Microbiology, Genetics, Zoology, Botany.
- 2-3 years directly related lab/technical experience.
- Knowledge of plant science, microbiology, genetics, and vertebrates.
- Ability to plan, organize, establish schedules with mínimal direction and be adaptable.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement, attention to detail, take initiative to be proactive and be cooperative, able to troubleshoot and have some mechanical aptitude.
- Knowledge of basic lab equipment and techniques.
- Willingness to partake in professional development or update courses.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, documentation and updating accurate notes for course work.
- Strong microbiology and chemistry background would be an asset.
- Experience and knowledge with GHS-WHMIS and work in a Biological Containment Level 2 microbiology lab.
- Able to do moderate lifting and standing.
- Familiar with standard MS office package.

**An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.**

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Available to work some weekends.
- No known allergies to plants or chemicals.

**The salary range for this position will be from $47,320.00 to $65,520.00 annually.**
