Job Summary

The LSI is a UBC Research Institute supported by the UBC faculties of Medicine and Science. It is home to the research programs of approximately 90 Principal Investigators from four faculties and over 15 departments, who conduct research on a wide variety of life science topics. The advertised position reports to the Strategic Research Development Officer and works closely with LSI Principal Investigators, research staff, and trainees as required.

The Research Grants Facilitator will also provide authoritative advice and understanding of the mandates, priorities, processes and policies of internal UBC and major Canadian and international government and private research funding sponsors. The position may also be involved in writing/editing content for internal and external communications related to the LSI. Working closely with the Strategic Research Development Manager and other LSI staff, this position will play a key role in establishing contacts with agencies and institutions in order to assist LSI researchers in obtaining research grants, agreements, and contracts and will work closely with other units at the University regarding ethics, grants, and contracts when required.

Organizational Status

The advertised position reports to the Strategic Research Development Officer and works closely with LSI Principal Investigators, research staff, and trainees as required.

Work Performed
- Initiates and facilitates collaborations and initiatives between researchers, advices on developing of research partnerships, and identifies funding opportunities
- Customizes scientific writing and technical presentations for target audiences incorporating a scientific background with an ability to understand and communicate complex scientific issues
- Responsible for understanding University policies and procedures in order to appropriately create and evaluate budgets to ensure that all grant funding agency and university requirements and protocols are met.
- Liaises directly with ORS, VP Research, sponsoring agency personnel, Research and Trust Accounting, Ethics Committees, Industry Liaison Office, faculty and administrative staff on questions related to the administration of research funding
- Researches information about the research and granting agency to customize proposals to the agency mandate, priorities, and guidelines; ensures University and agency policies and procedures, research ethics, publications restrictions, confidentiality issues, terms of payment and indirect cost recovery are addressed in proposals.
- Provides authoritative advice to researchers and leadership on the culture, priorities, eligibility criteria, deadlines, submission processes, budget requirements, and other important details regarding internal and external research funding
- Maintains and provides in-depth knowledge of LSI research activities, research progress, research metrics, alignment of LSI research with the wider research strategic priorities of UBC and the faculties represented by LSI membership.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in performance or poor judgement could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, image, reputation, and financial status of the Institute, Faculties, and University. Inappropriate judgement, non-compliance with contractual terms and/or agency guidelines, or incorrect interpretation of agency and University policy could result in loss of current and future research/funding opportunities.

Reports directly to the Strategic Research Development Manager and works closely with the Manager, Operations & HR, and Managers of LSI Core Facilities.
