Community Justice Worker (Direct Accountability Program/DAP)

**Location**:Oshawa Court Building and all JHS Durham Offices as Required
**Travel**: Yes, as required (mileage reimbursement)
**Hours**: 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday (May require flexibility)

The John Howard Society of Durham Region (JHSD) is a non-profit, social service agency dedicated to serving all individuals, families, youth and adults in programs in areas such as Community Justice, Employment and Training and Housing/ Residential Services.

**Role**:
Act as Community Justice Worker (CJW) at the Durham Region Court House each Monday to Friday to process Direct Accountability referrals. They will also accept referrals to process Pre-Charge referrals through Durham Regional Police Services. The Worker will monitor completion of sanctions and report the outcome back to the court or referring officer. They will also be required to work in the agency office location(s) from time to time.

**Tasks**

**Service User Support**
- The worker shall accept referrals at the court screened for the DAP program by the Crowns’ Office.
- Intake, assessment and follow up with referrals.
- Ability to advocate for service users with police services, and members of the judicial system within the court or community.
- Knowledge of community resources.
- Ability to make referrals when appropriate that specifically address the factors and/or circumstances that may have contributed to the accused person’s involvement in the criminal justice system.
- Assisting the accused in identifying community service placement opportunities, considering factors such as: location of placement, type of work, skills, relationship to the offence, participant’s needs
- Providing support and direction to the accused to assist in their completing any other sanctions that may be assigned.
- Referring individuals to other community-based programming options when needed.

**Case Management/Documentation Functions**
- Maintain accurate case notes on activity of each client as per JHS Durham and Ministry of Attorney General/Court standards.
- Monitor e-transfer activities, collection and submission of monetary sanctions with the service user and JHS Durham financial services.
- File documentation and case management.
- Submit monthly stats to the Ministry.

**Community Liaison Functions**
- Monitor and support the completion of community service work and all other sanction activities.
- Deliver workshops and speaking engagements about the Direct Accountability Program as needed.
- Build and enhancing partnerships with community-based agencies to ensure timely access to a range of programming opportunities and negotiating referral and monitoring protocols with these agencies.

**Other**
- Provide training to students and JHS staff as requested.
- Ensure that all services provided are within the standards of service maintained by JHS and consistent with the agency’s philosophical beliefs.
- Other related duties that may be assigned.

**Requirements**:

- The CJW shall have a strong knowledge of the criminal justice system and services within Durham Region and the GTA.
- An understanding of the principles of fairness and justice regarding reparation.
- University degree or Community College diploma in a related discipline.
- Exceptional interviewing skills, understands the impact of trauma and trauma-informed principles
- Demonstrates punctuality, accountability, integrity, and positivity.
- Excellent time management skills, communication skills and customer service skills.
- Pays attention to detail.

**Working Conditions**:

- COVID-19 Protocols are in place, PPE is provided.
- JHS Durham is currently certified with the C.U.P.E union and is in collective bargaining.
- This is an indefinite temporary position. As per ESA, 2000, this position could end with four (4) weeks’ notice.
