About Us

The Economics and Statistics Division assesses how current and projected economic conditions and macroeconomic policies influence government revenues as well as the effects of government spending, policies and projects on the economy. The Division supplies the core demographic and economic forecasts for the government's budgets and long range planning. The Division delivers regular reports and analysis about economic and social conditions in Nova Scotia, including the DailyStats - a digest about Nova Scotia and its place in the world. At the Division, we maintain a set of data and models that appraise the impacts of major economic events, investments and policy changes for the provincial economy. We organize and curate economic and social data for a wide range of users throughout the province.

About Our Opportunity

The Economic Policy Strategist works with a team of other trained economists, supporting fiscal planning in the Department of Finance and Treasury Board as well as policy and economic impact analysis across the government. The Economic Policy Strategist is responsible for producing several regular pieces of published economic analysis throughout the year.

The Economic Policy Strategist represents the Department of Finance and Treasury Board in cross-departmental policy initiatives and the Province of Nova Scotia in interactions with Statistics Canada.

Primary Accountabilities

As the Economic Policy Strategist, you will develop policy options and recommendations on major government interventions in the economy and responses to economic shocks. You will conduct economic impact analysis for changes to the economy including government program initiatives, new private sector production, changes to existing producers, major investments and macroeconomic policies.

You will also prepare economic forecasts and demographic projections. This includes researching model methodology, building the model structure, programming the model into econometric software, gathering data inputs, validating assumptions, conducting quality control and documenting the process/results.

The Economic Policy Strategist collects, retrieves and disseminates data and statistical evidence used for analysis by all government Departments and Agencies and provides feedback to Statistics Canada on data. You will also prepare analysis of new data releases about the economic, demographic, health, social and environmental conditions of Nova Scotians. You will report on short-run and long-term economic conditions in Nova Scotia; monitoring the global economic environment for risks and opportunities for the provincial economy.

The Economic Policy Strategist reports to the Senior Economist.
