The Faculty of Social Sciences is a diverse community of students and faculty studying and researching the elements of society that influence humankind. From economics and geography to psychology and religion, the Faculty strives to understand the human experience through a variety of disciplinary lenses and community perspectives. The goal is to develop education and research programs that influence the ways we understand and engage society and our unique communities.

**Job Summary**:
Under the direction of the manager, communications, the Specialist, Communications (the Specialist) will lead content development efforts to facilitate awareness and enhance the reputation of the Faculty of Social Sciences and its 14 affiliated departments, schools, and programs. The incumbent will develop and implement strategic content strategies to guide the Faculty’s use of social media and the Faculty’s adoption of emerging platforms and technologies. They will be responsible for reporting on the Faculty’s social channels and digital reach, and they will provide training and professional development opportunities to associated units and staff on the best practices for various platforms. As an associate member of the CMPA team, the Specialist will also work closely with central communications units on coordinated social media strategies, media relations, content creation and communications, marketing and international student recruitment, in accordance with the University communications and marketing framework.

The incumbent will be experienced in photography, videography, and image editing (using software including, but not limited to, Adobe Suite products and Canva) to produce images and assets to accompany messages on social media, websites, presentations, and print projects. The position will maintain effective working relationships with a variety of departmental units and stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors, with whom they will partner to develop audience-centric content about research, teaching, learning, gifts, and career successes. The incumbent will also ensure the content they produce reflects McMaster’s positioning and branding to diverse audiences.

**Accountabilities**:

- Meet with key Faculty stakeholders (faculty, staff, students, donors, alumni) to develop engaging, audience-centric stories, web and social content for central and Faculty-owned news sites that align with the Faculty's strategic direction.
- Manage individual priorities within the framework established by the team and respond to a rapidly changing flow of assignments
- Report on Faculty events, courses, awards, achievements, etc., for the Faculty website and McMaster’s central websites
- Develop and implement a competitive social media strategy that integrates content marketing across existing and emerging social platforms, to grow the Faculty's audiences on each platform.
- Coordinate regular editorial meetings with department/program/school contacts
- Write 3-5 news articles monthly for external stakeholders
- Develop newsletters for key Faculty stakeholders
- Write website copy and digital ads for use across various communication channels
- Support the development of the Faculty’s Year in Review document
- Provide or coordinate event photography, as needed
- Facilitate social marketing campaigns run by the Faculty of Social Sciences and its departments
- Ensure McMaster’s writing style, branding and accessibility standards are met in all content created for the Faculty of Social Sciences
- Use content management software (e.g., WordPress, Smartsheet, and Hootsuite) to coordinate and document the timely delivery of content
- Use customer relationship management software (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics) to engage internal stakeholders in Mosaic
- Remain current with frequent developments in and best practices for design, graphics, social media, journalism, and communications
- Research emerging techniques and technologies to facilitate storytelling and audience engagement
- Develop quarterly reports for social media, media mentions and story placements
- Supervise and oversee the work of casual student employees, interns, and volunteers to support the creation of authentic, student-centric content
- Provide training and resources for faculty and staff on social media engagement

**Qualifications**:

- 4-year university degree in journalism, communications, digital communications, or multimedia.
- 5 years of experience working in journalism, external communications, or public relations
- Experience working in a university setting is an asset
- Demonstrated proficiency in writing news articles, website copy and digital ads for use across various communication channels.
- Ability to prioritize and work independently to meet tight deadlines.
