**Position Description**:
**UNIT PROFILE**:
The Forensic Psychiatry Program work towards restoring and maintaining the mental health and well-being of mentally disordered adult offenders while managing risk as mandated by the Criminal Code of Canada and ordered by the Ontario Review Board. This multi-disciplinary team includes nursing and allied health professionals working together to provide a wide range of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services. In this capacity the Forensic Psychiatry Program provides: clinical, risk and medico-legal assessments, inpatient treatments in General and Secure environments, and outpatient treatment and community reintegration services/support for the Central-South region and Halton.

The Forensic Safety Specialist provides knowledge translation and exchange to members of the clinical team, management, and other staff of the Forensic Psychiatry Program in accordance with the mission, vision and values of SJHH. The Forensic Safety Specialist will play a key role in program development including planning, introduction, implementation and evaluation of proactive safety strategies for the Forensic Psychiatry Program with potential expansion to the Provincial Forensic Network in response to reduction of violence in the workplace. The Forensic Safety Specialist applies safety and criminological theory and safety legislation to support clinical care within a safe environment. The criminological and safety information applied and gathered will support clinical development and implementation of safety plans for vulnerable patients and those who present a risk. The Forensic Safety Specialist also provides in-service consultations and training to staff and management which includes the research and analysis of crime statistics of the Forensic Psychiatry Program to inform and prevent crime and violence on hospital grounds and in the community.
- Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Program development for integration of safety strategies into clinical care with planning for broader expansion.
- Development and implementation of safety plans with and for vulnerable patients and patients who present a risk.
- Knowledge translation and exchange directed to members of the clinical team, management, patients and families with respect to personal and environmental safety.
- Liaison with Police, Crown Attorneys, Courts, Jail Superintendents, and other Forensic Programs regarding safe transfer and transition of patients.
- Developing and informing forensic procedures as it relates to patients, staff and environmental safety.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Community College Diploma in Safety, Risk Management and/or Security required; Undergraduate Degree preferred.
- Additional specialized training in safety, security and risk management required.
- Certification in Security and/or Safety required.
- Membership in a professional organization related to Security and/or Safety preferred.
- Minimum 5 years recent related experience in the delivery of safety/security services required.
- Minimum 2 years recent related experience in a mental health environment required; experience in Forensic Psychiatry environment preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Ontario Mental Health Act, and Health & Safety legislation required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of risk assessment and mitigation required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety protocols and procedures required.
- Demonstrated ability to form and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with external agencies required.
- Demonstrated excellent knowledge translations skills required.
- Demonstrated skill in the development, implementation, evaluation and refinement of plans required.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including strong verbal and written communication skills required.
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, including the use of root cause analysis required.
- Demonstrated strong report writing and documentation skills required.
