**Purpose**:
This role provides a cross of the existing Equipment Operator and Fire Officer positions. Its purpose is to maintain Hamilton International Airport facilities, grounds and equipment in accordance with Transport Canada regulations; operate a variety of heavy and light equipment for landscaping, or to remove snow, ice and other debris from airport surfaces, as well as respond in aircraft rescue firefighting (ARFF) apparatus equipment when in emergency situations.

**Qualifications**:

- You must have graduated grade 12 plus two years' related training and experience in the operation of a variety of equipment with levers and switches in confined spaces or congested areas.
- You must possess an Ontario Driver’s License Class DZ or equivalent
- Must possess or be able to obtain a license for Restricted Operator Certificate with Aeronautical Qualification (ROC-A)
- Hold or can obtain and maintain the appropriate level of Airport Security Clearance
- Hold or can obtain and maintain Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP)
- Extensive firefighting experience is required; NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 1001 Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications would be considered an asset
- Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) education and experience is imperative
- Follow written instructions in order to perform a variety of tasks such as operating vehicles or assisting on trade or craft type work. Must be able to use simple arithmetic and complete reports or logs. Understand and follow directions, both oral and written; verbal and non-verbal communication skills are required.
- Must be able to work (occasionally) in extremely adverse conditions.

**Essential Functions**:

- Operates equipment such as combination of snow plow and runway sweeper, snow blower, dump trucks, front-end loader, backhoe, tractor with 20 foot attachment, graders, lawn mowers, weed sprayers, trimmer and paint machines for road striping.
- Maintains on-going communication with air traffic controller when airside.
- Monitors and reports airside conditions such as snow accumulation.
- Operates hand and power tools.
- Attaches and detaches accessory pieces of equipment.
- Maintains airside runways, taxiways, aprons and groundside streets, sidewalks, parking lots and grounds.
- Accompanies contractors and service person for airside repairs.
- Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs such as cleaning and servicing of equipment.
- Performs minor building maintenance.
- Performs electrical and lighting maintenance such as replacing modular components; makes minor repairs to building electrical systems.
- Performs repairs to sewage systems, lift stations and storm sewer systems.
- Performs water main and minor indoor plumbing repairs.
- Performs animal control.
- Performs other duties as assigned that are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.
- Operates crash, fire and rescue equipment to ensure the safety and protection of life, property and the environment. Respond to all emergency calls at the airport facilities, establishing incident command, and exercising control over the emergency; until external agencies take over incident command, or incident is stopped, and a return to normal operations occurs.
