The Museum of Health Care at Kingston is Canada’s premier resource devoted to bringing to life the story of health and health care. As a history of medicine museum, the Museum of Health Care strives to connect visitors with the experiences of people in past times and provide context and perspective on today’s health issues. To help Canadians better understand this history, the Museum preserves and promotes the rich material legacy of our medical and healthcare past.

**COVID-19 Protocols**: As the Museum resides on KHSC grounds, KHSC policies, including full vaccination requirements and masking at all times while on the premises, are in place. The Museum maintains an extensive Health and Safety plan for in-office protocol, and all staff receive health & safety training as well as COVID-19 protocol training.

**Public Programs Assistant (Museum Interpreter)**

SALARY: $15.75/hr
START / END DATES: May 15 - September 1
WORK HOURS: 7hrs per day, 5 days per week (35hrs/week). May 15 to 29, Monday to Friday. May 29 to September 1, Wednesday to Sunday.

Working in collaboration with other Visitor Services staff, the Public Programs Assistant will focus on tasks as detailed below:

- Delivering in-museum and outreach educational programming for grades K-12 and university classes, adult/senior education programs, and other community organizations
- Conducting guided tours of the Museum of Health Care’s galleries
- Conducting outdoor guided walking tours (1 hour 45 minutes in length) of Kingston General Hospital National Historic Site and surrounding historically significant sites
- Assisting in the planning and facilitation of events for adults such as lectures, and/or exhibit openings
- Linking with community partners to represent the Museum at special events, such as Princess Street Promenade, and collaborate with other member museums of the Kingston Association of Museums, Art Galleries, and Historic Sites on professional development activities.
- Review and expand upon existing research material highlighting the local, national, and international history of medicine and health care.
- Assisting in the development of customized program and tour options for specific groups.
- Gather and analyze data about numbers and origins of visitors, effectiveness of marketing methods and visitor satisfaction, interests and suggestions.
- Create written materials used for blog and newsletter posts
- Keep detailed, accurate records of program/tour delivery statistics
- Participate in general museum maintenance and front-line customer service tasks such a gift shop purchases, wayfinding and addressing general inquires

Required Qualifications
- Excellent communication skills in written and oral English
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office
- Ability to work in inclement weather (heat, rain)
- Ability to independently deliver outdoor guided tours (1.5 km of walking)
- Ability to lift up to 20lbs
- Ability to stand for long periods of time

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of French or other second language
- Knowledge and/or experience of Indigenous history
- General knowledge of health care history and/or social history of Canada.
- Programming design experience for any age group.
- Experience in and/or knowledge of the principles of heritage interpretation.
- Experience in and/or knowledge of event planning and marketing.
- Interest in a career in history, history of medicine, museology, education, heritage interpretation, tourism or other related discipline.

**Young Canada Works Eligibility**
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada;
- are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
- will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;
- have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
- intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.
- **Note**: Priority will be given to students who have not previously participated in the YCWHO employment program.
