What can I expect to do in this role?
Under the direction of the Director, Finance, the Manager, Corporate Accounting oversees and manages the financial accounting and reporting processes within PIPSC. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, managing internal controls, and complying with relevant accounting standards and regulations.
Primary responsibilities:
Manage the preparation and review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Develop, implement and review internal control policies and procedures to safeguard Institute assets, prevent fraud, and ensure compliance with accounting regulations. Regularly assess the effectiveness of internal controls and make necessary improvements.
Analyze financial data and performance metrics to provide meaningful insights to management. Identify trends, variances, and areas of improvement to support decision-making and strategic planning.
Contribute to the preparation of the annual budget and periodic forecasts. Collaborate with other departments to gather and manage relevant data, analyze budget-to-actual variances, and provide explanations for any significant discrepancies.
Coordinate with external auditors during annual audits and provide necessary documentation and explanations. Facilitate the relationship with the auditors. Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax regulations, and other legal requirements.
Manage employees. Provide guidance, mentorship, and training to develop their skills and enhance overall departmental performance.
Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, automate manual tasks, and improve efficiency. Review and manage the implementation of new systems or software solutions to enhance accuracy, effectiveness, and timeliness of financial reporting, as required.
Communicate financial results, analysis, and recommendations to senior management, board members, and other stakeholders. Present financial information in a clear and understandable manner to facilitate decision-making.
Stay up to date with changes in accounting standards, regulations, and industry best practices. Ensure the Institute's accounting policies and procedures are in compliance with the latest requirements.
Assess and mitigate financial risks through proper identification, evaluation, and implementation of controls. Monitor key risk areas and recommend strategies to mitigate potential risks.
Develop and recommend for approval budgetary and expenditure proposals for delegated functions. Review and approve expense claims, overtime, leave, travel requests and timecards for direct reports.
Participate in multi-disciplinary teams assigned to special projects and work collaboratively with employees in other sections.
May be required to deliver information sessions to staff, steward, or members on issues related to all aspects of member compensation as required.
May be requested to undertake other related duties as required.
Education, Experience and Skills Required
**Education**:
A bachelor's degree in accounting; and
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation; and
Five (5) to eight (8) years of relevant experience or
An equivalent combination of education and experience
Language requirement:
Fluency in both French and English is an asset.
Skills and experience required:
Thorough understanding of relevant accounting laws, regulations, and compliance requirements, ensuring accurate financial reporting and adherence to legal obligations.
Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and familiarity with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
Knowledge and experience in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
Experience leading and managing accounting teams, fostering a collaborative work environment, and promoting professional development.
Experience managing multiple projects maintaining high-quality standards.
