Under the supervision of the Manager**, **the DAD Coder analyses, codes and abstracts inpatient discharges as per the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) guidelines.
- Quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the treatment record of each inpatient visit for completeness and accuracy to ensure that the documentation meets provincial, CIHI, Accreditation and Hospital Requirements.
- Maintain minimum coding output standards as determined by Coding group in consultation with the Manager, and the Director, eHealth in order to meet hospital and Ministry Reporting deadlines.
- Review the inpatient encounter for the purpose of coding diagnoses, complications, procedures and other required information to satisfy CIHI, MOH and CHEO requirements.
- Extract and summarize pertinent data from the inpatient record and electronically abstract this data for use in the assessment of resource utilization and reporting to MOH and Ontario Trauma Registry
- Participate in data quality exercises and meetings, the formulation of current coding lists and coding discrepancy identification and resolution.
- Communicate with physicians, nurses and paramedical staff to ensure timely, accurate completion of the record and ensure comprehensive data capture.
- Participate in the development and implementation of departmental policies to ensure data is gathered and tracked efficiently.
- Assist with education of Health Records personnel and instruct and evaluate students’ practice related to the DAD coder position functions
- Complete electronic data transfers to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) monthly data submissions and corrections to the Inpatient Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and Emergency, Surgical Day Care, Chemotherapy, Dialysis information to the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS) database and Trauma cases
- Provide expertise and educating all levels of hospital staff on ICD-10-CA and CCI classification systems and CIHI abstracting and data collection standards including Case Mix Groups, Complexity, Resource Intensity Weights (RIW), Comprehensive Ambulatory Classification System (CACS), and Ambulatory Case Weights (ACW).
- Keep informed and understand the implications of CIHI data collection and its impact on the new Health Based Allocation Model (HBAM) hospital funding model.
- Keep informed of current and future directions of CIHI and assess impact on the hospital and disseminate information.
- Determine methodological approaches to internal quality assurance audits and performing these audits.
- Ensure data meets regulatory requirements.
- Identify areas requiring coding audits, review charts and implement changes.
- Identify quality and risk indicators captured through the coding and abstracting process.
- Audit integrity of inpatient, surgical day care and emergency information by identifying, investigating, analyzing and resolving all errors or omissions.
- Support Health Information Analysts, Inpatient and NACRS Coding Classification Specialists and Manager by responding to any questions, providing continuing education and keeping them apprised of the current data quality issues, mandates and coding and abstracting guidelines.
- Revise procedures and manuals regarding coding and abstracting of inpatient, surgical day care, emergency, chemotherapy and dialysis information and provide feedback on how to improve
- Coordinate Data Quality feedback and corrections from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Criminal Record Check (CRC) (Essential)
- Graduate of an approved Health Information Management program (Essential)
- Bilingualism (English/French) (preferred)
- Certification as a Health Information Management Professional (CHIMA) (Essential)
- Three years of recent related experience (exp in ICD coding, computerized abstracting and use of related abstracting software report writer tools (preferred)
- Attention to detail and the ability to concentrate for long periods of time (Essential)
- Ability to organize and prioritize work according to corporate and program goals (Essential)
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and individually (Essential)
- Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines (Essential)
