**Primary function**:
The Privacy and Information Management Office (PIMO) is a unit within the General Counsel Office (GCO) of Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) responsible for recordkeeping, access to information and privacy (RkAP). Reporting to the Manager of PIMO, the Privacy Advisor will work as part of a team to manage day-to-day activities in the area of privacy, and provide expert advice to the organization.

The Advisor will provide technical and business expertise in respect to the privacy provisions of Ontario’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), the Legal Aid Services Act, 2020 (LASA), and other applicable legislation, directives and policies.

**Key accountabilities**:

- Monitor, review and update LAO policies and practices in relation to the collection, use, disclosure, retention and disposal of personal information to ensure compliance with applicable privacy legislation, directives, standards and “best practices”
- Ensure privacy by-design is consistently applied to all new and existing technologies, procurements and initiatives
- Conduct Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), making recommendations to business units and tracking the implementation of recommendations
- Assess and report on the privacy posture of third party vendors through the analysis of privacy policies, terms of use, SOC2 reports and other business and legal documents
- Manage the intake and response to privacy inquiries received by the General Counsel Office
- Draft briefing notes on privacy issues for the Manager
- Track organizational compliance and maturity through the creation of reports
- Research and advise on the privacy impacts of developing trends, such as artificial intelligence and information and data governance
- Lead enterprise-level projects related to privacy, such as LAO’s index of Personal Information Banks (PIBs)
- Oversee the procurement of third party privacy services and manage business relationships with external vendors
- Establish and communicate privacy policies and standards, and provide training and guidance to staff
- Manage responses to privacy incidents
- Participate in professional networking groups and other activities to keep current with the practices of other similar organizations and levels of government
- Other duties as assigned

**Required skills & experience**:

- A university degree in a related field (e.g. information management, public administration, law) and/or a certificate in privacy studies
- At least three (3) years of experience in privacy in a public or private sector organization, or equivalent experience
- Thorough understanding of FIPPA, LASA, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information, and the functions and role of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC)
