Analytical Manager

About the Position

This position is responsible for providing technical and innovation leadership to the global Geochemistry group with respect to new and improved instrumentation, equipment, methods and techniques, and ensuring development activities are aligned with ALS strategic goals.

Specific Responsibilities
- Evaluate and critically assess new instrumentation, equipment, methods, and techniques for potential use at ALS, including evaluation on technical viability and alignment with strategic goals;
- Report on and provide recommendations on the above;
- Liaise with key instrument suppliers on a regular basis to communicate ALS requirements, collaborate and review new offerings;
- Actively work on developing improvements to instrumentation, sample introduction and analytical methods;
- Develop new methods and procedures to meet client and user needs;
- Where new and/or improved methods/instruments are developed, coordinate documentation, training and global adoption;
- Assist with implementation of methods/instruments at global locations, including travel where necessary;
- Develop and review Standard Operating Procedures to include global best practices and minimise quality issues;
- Prioritise direct reporting team’s efforts to align project selection and execution strategies to achieve the highest potential outcome for the business;
- Ensure direct reporting team members use best practice documentation to preserve well-presented records of projects, concepts, experimental tests, validation and conclusions for all development activities;
- Share development successes/failures, strategies with others within global Geochemistry, and across business streams as necessary;
- Provide technical leadership to the Geochemistry team;
- Assist in quality investigations;
- Perform laboratory, including branch, audits when necessary;
- Maintain the ALS Geochemistry Standard Equipment List;
- Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
- Observe and comply with all ALS Health and Safety polities and procedures;
- Other duties as assigned;
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated judgement, creativity, integrity and ability to effectively problem solve;
- Excellent English verbal and written communication skills;
- Able to present information effectively;
- Demonstrated decision making skills with the ability to adapt to organizational and team needs;
- Excellent attention to detail;
- Maintains thorough knowledge of company philosophies, policies, procedures, programs and initiatives;
- Ability to work under pressure and strict time deadlines to meet organisational goals;
- Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years’ experience operating spectroscopy instruments (AAS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS, XRF);
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry;
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively increasing responsibility in the area of analytical chemistry or technical innovation;
- Multilingual preferred, however business operations are primarily conducted in English;
Physical Demands
- Able to travel periodically when required;
- Able to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
