**Reports to**: Quebec Regional Operation Manager, ALS Geochemistry
**About the Position**:
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall management of the Val-d’Or Laboratory. The primary focus of this role is to achieve budgeted financial and operational targets while ensuring a high level of client satisfaction and engagement. This role also involves driving profitable growth through exceptional service, innovation, effective cost management, key client visitation and employee engagement. In addition to achieving budgeted financial performance targets, this position is involved in client retention and business maintenance through key account management. This role also works in with functional support teams and is responsible for ensuring corporate Quality and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) programs are adhered to. Finally, this role takes the lead in fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes safety and quality, values employee engagement and develops people.
Specific Responsibilities
- Meet or exceed all budgeted financial and business targets; including ROS, underlying EBIT and TEC with a focus on sustained margin improvement;
- Develop the annual operating budget and strategy for the Business Unit and work with the management team to execute the strategy and achieve budgeted targets;
- Run minuted monthly disciplined management meetings, tracking key business metrics, strategic actions and coaching sectional managers on financial management;
- Perform client meetings in accordance with targets, sharing innovation and service data, understanding client needs and maintaining strong client relationships
- Drive market share growth through supporting bid to win and managing key clients;
- Ensure productivity targets and turn-around time (TAT) commitments are achieved in a safe and sustainable manner by effectively balancing staffing levels with sample volumes;
- Actively support the quality program mandates including conducting routine checks, staff training, participating in audits, resolving quality issues in a timely manner and ensuring that quality targets are met or exceeded;
- Promote a strong safety culture by communicating and upholding the ALS Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) policies and programs;
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS Health and Safety policies and procedures;
- Ensure human resources are effectively managed including recruiting, performance management, employee relations, attendance promotion and staff scheduling as it relates to the operations;
- Maintain a continuous focus on employee development and cross training with an eye towards identifying and growing key talent;
- Actively support employee engagement through corporately developed or local initiatives that solicit employee feedback and recognize their contribution;
- Embody the ALS Core Values and foster a workplace culture that consistently reflects these values;
- Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong business acumen, coupled with the ability to interpret financial data, make effective decisions and execute any necessary changes;
- Effective business retention and experience in relationship building and partnering with clients;
- A robust background in the Geochemistry industry and the ability to quickly foster rapport with all stakeholders including clients and regulatory agencies;
- A strong orientation towards service quality, technical innovation and continuous improvement;
- An unwavering commitment to employee safety;
- A history of actively engaging employees, supporting people development and growing key talent;
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire and motivate employees across multiple locations to achieve a common vision;
- Able to effectively manage change in a dynamic environment and balance multiple priorities within tight time deadlines;
- Excellent computer skills including use of MS Office Suite;
- Excellent English & French communication skills, both verbal and written.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized BSc. degree or technical diploma in management or chemistry or related field;
- Minimum of 6 years of analytical laboratory experience;
- Minimum of 5 years of management or supervisory experience in a production laboratory environment;
- Familiarity with the Canadian Geochemistry industry preferred.
