**York Court Support Liaison & Counsellor**

Contract Position:
37.5 hours per week

Start Date: May 2023 Contract End Date: June 30, 2023 (possibility of an extension)

The York Court Liaison & Counsellor works out of the Newmarket Courthouse to assist the adult women who are in custody either awaiting bail, on remand, to set trail date or enter a plea; and/or have a number of obstacles preventing their release into the community. The York Court Liaison & Counsellor ensures that women who are detained know their legal rights and how to exercise them, as well as having access to all available and relevant legal and social services. Furthermore, this individual advises duty counsel that the client requires assistance and ensures that Legal Aid representatives meet with the clients. The York Court Liaison & Counsellor will also contact support bodies to ensure that clients have an identified individual to act as their surety, and acts to assist the client in achieving a measure of social support and stability.

The York Court Liaison & Counsellor also provides women with free counselling services at Belinda’s Place - designed for those who are marginalized due to low income, lack of housing, education, mental health and substance use. Through this counselling, the York Court Liaison & Counsellor facilitates community reintegration, promotes personal well-being, and acts to enhance community safety by addressing the underlying causes of incarceration and marginalization using a trauma informed, inclusive and gender responsive lens.

**Areas of Responsibility**:
Serves as a liaison between the EFry Hope and Help for Women and the women appearing at the Newmarket Courthouse, providing information and support to accused persons and their families before, during and subsequent to court proceedings.
- Acts as a support figure to the women at the Newmarket Courthouse by providing referrals to legal and social services; explanation of court procedures and terminology; and connecting them to family, friends, lawyers, and/or other community agencies.
- Arranges and conducts assessment interviews for clients referred to the program; works collaboratively with clients to determine the preferred counselling format and ensures effective delivery of services.
- Maintains an atmosphere that is non-judgmental and supportive of the emotional and physical wellbeing and rehabilitation of women who are in conflict with the law
- Fosters professional relationships and maintains communication with all relevant members of the social / justice community.
- Ensures that the confidentiality of all client records and information is maintained.
- Prepares monthly statistical and qualitative reporting for submission to the Manager of Community Justice Programs.
- Committed to participating on various committees and advocating for women.
- Attends all appropriate court meetings, including various court committee meetings.
- Keeps abreast of trends, community resources and developments in the justice/social profession by participating in workshops, conferences, and continued professional development
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager or designate.
- A degree and/or diploma from a University or College in a related field with experience working with vulnerable populations
- A demonstrated awareness of relevant legislation including but not limited to the Canadian Criminal Code, Family Law and Ontario, and the Child and Youth Family Services Act
- Experience working with adults in the criminal justice system within a therapeutic framework
- Experience working with individuals with diverse needs: sexual offenders, bereavement, self-esteem, domestic violence, parenting, anger management, fraud and theft offenders, childhood abuse survivors / trauma survivors, victims, etc.
- The ability to maintain and encourage confident assessment, counselling and program facilitation skills in order to effectively interact with clients using a trauma informed approach
- Knowledge of the judiciary and court systems and their high-level procedures and protocols, as well as the roles of court personnel
- Knowledge of community resources and services
- Diagnostic and interpersonal skills to deal with a diverse client group in a diplomatic and nonjudgmental manner
- Practical knowledge and experience administering gender specific and responsive programming
- Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well and collaborate with diverse community groups and other stakeholders (i.e. court personne
