**Position Summary**
Reporting to the Director, Issues Management & Strategic Initiatives, the Communications Coordinator supports the Issues Management & Strategic Initiatives team and Strategic Communications unit in coordinating initiatives, programs and services to ensure the delivery of integrated communications, marketing, digital and creative services to internal and external audiences.
The Communications Coordinator is part of a dynamic, best-in-class team developing proactive communications strategies and communications campaigns that support strategic objectives and respond to current affairs. They work alongside experts in media monitoring, communications planning, news content, media relations, social media management, issues management, digital design and development, and brand marketing.
**Duties**
- Monitors and contributes to the maintenance of channels (social media, websites, newsletters, blogs, etc.) used to communicate with university audiences.
- Writes material for targeted audiences across a variety of channels.
- Contributes to communications and marketing plans for specific initiatives, programs or audiences.
- Provides editing, fact-checking and proofreading support as needed.
- Plans, builds and sends out news and media monitoring reports.
- Provide active monitoring of news, digital and social media channels and platforms for U of A activities and content for the External Relations team.
- Coordinates mailing lists, including submitting requests for information and working with Information Services.
- General administrative support and coordination of team initiatives and activities.
**Minimum Qualifications**
- A degree or diploma in a related field.
- Possesses one to three years of progressive communications and marketing experience within a complex, multi-stakeholder organization.
- Knowledge of the public environment, including the media and the political system, and how they function.
- Comprehension of the Canadian post-secondary environment.
- Ability to quickly grasp the relevancy of University of Alberta news stories.
- Strong research and writing skills with the ability to be concise and to write analyses.
- English language editorial skills.
- Ability to produce results under pressure quickly and reliably.
- Ability to balance competing priorities and meet and manage client expectations.
- High degree of professionalism and judgement.
- Ability to take initiative and to work autonomously.
- Aptitude to learn and keep pace with new web publishing technologies.
