Communications Officer, Alumni

Overview:
The Communications Officer, Alumni, is responsible for creating ongoing communications and special projects that support the Faculty of Engineering Advancement team’s engagement efforts with alumni and donor audiences. This role will produce captivating and valuable communications that engage and attract supporters to the Faculty. They will work to create communications that support the Faculty’s efforts to build a culture of philanthropy.
Reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications for the Faculty, the Communications Officer works as part of the Faculty Advancement team, partnering closely with the Alumni and Donor Relations Officers to strategize and plan creative and compelling content for alumni and donors. They will work with departments and campus partners to support efforts to thoughtfully and effectively engage our community of alumni and donors through compelling communications using various Faculty and University channels.
The Communications Officer, Alumni will support the Faculty with writing timely and relevant Engineering news stories and features as required. This role will work to advance the Faculty’s image through the production of professional, compelling and effective communications materials.
**Responsibilities**:
Plan and execute creative communications for Alumni audiences
- Develops and executes integrated communication plans to successfully inspire and engage our alumni audiences
- Writes compelling news and feature stories that demonstrate impact and inspire alumni engagement and donor support
- Project manages (including budget management), writes content for and edits regular Alumni news based communications including e-newsletter (issued 3 times/year) and WEAL, an annual printed alumni magazine
- Ensures that alumni from all Faculty of Engineering schools, departments and programs are reflected and fully represented in produced content
- Posts and manages Faculty web content, and supports departments in posting their content, specific to alumni interests
- Coordinates photography and video development needs, working collaboratively with colleagues
- Evaluates all communication initiatives, through data analysis and collaborative post-mortem exercises to inform future decision making
- Ensures consistency, accuracy and excellence in quality and content of messaging in all written pieces
Manages special alumni and Faculty projects
- Manages the massive amounts of student experience content and organizes into useable dynamic, nostalgic presentations to inspire deeper engagement with alumni and donors
- Researches donor and alumni behavior, staying on top of best practices and evolving trends in Advancement and consultation with alumni and donor teams
- Writes speaking notes for the Dean of Engineering, specific for alumni audiences
Collaboration and team support
- Provides writing and editing support for the Advancement team, as required, to ensure high-quality and consistent messaging
- Establishes relationships across the Faculty to foster increased sharing of information among Engineering’s two schools and six departments, working to source and secure stories of alumni and donor interest while supporting the integration of Faculty-wide communications to reduce duplication and streamline processes
- Identifies and promotes story opportunities and reviews with communications team to determine next steps as part of the Faculty communications editorial calendar and planning tools
- Analyzes issues, events and trends that could impact the Faculty, alerts the team to any issues
- Follows best practices in communications and offers insight to ensure ongoing improvement
- Regularly reviews and contributes to central Editorial Calendars for planning purposes
- Works collaboratively with the Faculty of Engineering’s marketing and digital media teams for amplifying content aligned with the Faculty’s goals
- Works collaboratively with the Faculty of Engineering’s Development team for identifying and amplifying content aligned with the Faculty’s goals
- Provides excellent customer service to colleagues across the Faculty
Other
- Provides back-up copy writing and editing services to members of the Engineering communications team as required, including writing news stories for posting in Engineering and University channels
- Attends events to compose notes capturing key messages for news and feature stories
- Ensures all University brand guidelines and Waterloo Engineering standards are followed
- Provides onsite support for Faculty and Advancement events, including Reunion and Convocation as needed
- Supports the integration and leveraging of content across a range of Faculty online channels as a means to support the Faculty’s marketing communications strategies
