Reporting to the Controller, the **Payroll Specialist** is responsible for the timely processing of payroll and remittances for Matheson Constructors Group of Companies. The Payroll Specialist is accountable for accuracy, maintaining a high degree of confidentiality, and compliance with Paryoll legislations. The Payrolle Specialist liaisons with various internal clients including Employees, as well as external parties such as Service Canada, WSIB, CRA, etc.

**Essential Duties and Responsbilities **include, but are not limited to the following:

- Prepare, verify, and process all Employee payroll related payments, for all Salaried and Hourly, and Unionized Employees (weekly and bi-weekly).
- Process pay raises, pay adjustments, involuntary deductions such as taxes and wage garnishments, direct deposits, records of employment, terminations, etc.
- Prepare and verify statements of earnings for Employees, indicating gross and net salaries and deductions such as taxes, union dues, garnishments, etc.
- Identify and resolve payroll discrepancies.
- Ensure timesheets are setup with proper cost codes, aligned with project budget.
- Prepare and submit CRA, EHT and WSIB remittances and reconcile annual filing reports.
- Prepare and submit benefit remittances for Group Benefit Plans, as well as Group Registered Retirement plans.
- Prepare and submit Union remittances, withholdings and reporting.
- Prepare new Employee onboarding setup in Payroll system.
- Process Record of Employments (ROE) and submittal in keeping with governing timelines and Company policies and procedures.
- Process and prepare T4’s, including T2200, Auto Taxable Benefit/Mileage, and other Taxable Benefits.
- Process Employee expense reports and asset statements.
- Respond to Employee inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Provide guidance to leadership with regards to various payroll legislation
- Create and reconcile all general ledger and job costing entries for each payroll period including accruals.
- Understand and navigate through the payroll modules in Viewpoint and Jonas.
- Create ad-hoc payroll reports as required.

**Position Requirements**

**Educational and Professsional Requirements**:

- A post-secondary diploma in Business Administration, Payroll Administration, or Accounting and/or related equivalent experience.
- Completed (or working towards) Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is preferred.
- Experience working with unionized payroll.
- Minimum 5 years of work experience administering payroll in a fast-paced, unionized environment.
- Knowledge of Payroll Compliance Legislation and the Ontario Employment Standards Act.
- Knowledge of Introductory Accounting and Accounting Principles including the recording, analysis, and reporting of financial information.
- Experience in the Construction industry an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain strict confidentiality and manage sensitive information.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs with an emphasis on MS Excel.
- Experience with Payroll software is an asset.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines while producing quality and consistent work.
- Ability to function effectively within a team and collaborate well with staff, colleagues, and managers.
- Ability to analyze data, strong organizational skills, demonstrated attention to detail.
