FAMILY EDUCATOR

The Family Educator provides consultation, education and therapeutic support to parents/caregivers of youth ages 12-25 experiencing difficulties related to their substance use and mental health.

The Family Educator supports parents/caregivers in understanding and addressing their youths’ substance use, substance related behaviours, concurrent mental health concerns and issues related to family impact.

The Family Educator provides services to parents/caregivers ranging from telephone consultation or brief individual therapeutic support to that of Lead Facilitator of multi-session education/skills development/support groups.

This is a 35 hour/4 days per week (with benefits), non-supervisory position reporting to the Executive Director, with some evening hours required. This position requires a valid driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications/Requirements:

- Degree or Diploma in Applied Health or Social Sciences from an accredited college or university
- Membership, or demonstrated eligibility for registration, with a professional college that grants the designation to practice psychotherapy in Ontario
- Criminal Reference Check - Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Minimum 3 years recent and relevant clinical experience in working with parents/caregivers specific to youth addiction and mental health in a community treatment setting
- Demonstrated knowledge in evidence based practices for working with parents/caregivers/families which includes individual and group counselling modalities, case management, crisis intervention and discharge planning
- Excellent verbal and written communication, critical thinking, creative problem solving skills
- Ability to work as an effective member of an inter-professional team with excellent interpersonal, advocacy, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to work under pressure, prioritize workload and meet deadlines
- Willingness and ability to continue to improve professional competence and knowledge
- Proficient computer skills for report writing, word processing, data entry, access to information etc.

**Responsibilities**:

- Engage parents/caregivers from diverse backgrounds and employ counselling and support interventions in alignment with best practices and as per client need
- Collaborate with parents/caregivers to design client-centered, strength-based change strategies, reflecting evidence-based practices and clinical experience
- Work effectively with parents/caregivers whose youth present with multiple and complex problems
- Conduct individual, group, and family sessions in a professional and ethical manner, following all recognized standards, legislation, and guidelines relevant to clinical practice
- Document all client interventions as per legislative standards of practice and adhere to agency documentation requirements and timelines
- Respond to parent/caregiver requests and crises in a responsible, timely and flexible manner
- Develop discharge plans in consultation with parents/caregivers
- Engage in regularly scheduled individual and group clinical supervision for: clinical support; reflection and growth/development; enhancing of skills, confidence and competence; to ensure that clients are safe and work practices remain ethical; and to ensure adhering to organisational and practice standards 
- Establish and maintain collaborative partnerships with allied community organizations
- Participate in program evaluation, planning and development

Pay: $29.00-$32.50 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
