**Department summary**

Future Energy Systems (FES) is the University of Alberta’s (UAlberta) largest research initiative, and funded by $75 million from the federal Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). The initiative supports over 120 projects involving over 160 researchers and over 1,000 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from nine faculties (Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences; Arts; Business; Campus Saint-Jean; Education; Engineering; Law; Native Studies; Science). The FES mandate is to conduct research that supports transition to a low carbon energy future, taking advantage of the world leading capacity at UAlberta.

**Position summary**

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Operations and EDI Coordinator coordinates initiatives, programs and processes of strategic importance to the FES program. The position actively and independently supports the execution of strategic research partnerships through coordination of relationships with stakeholders, planning and facilitation of meetings, and sharing of sophisticated technical research information with qualified stakeholders. The position facilitates FES governance processes by supporting the Research Advisory Committee, Strategic Leadership Advisory Board and Research Themes Advisory Committee, liaising with internal personnel and external stakeholders to ensure efficient operation of key governance processes. The position works with the Program Manager to operationalize necessary processes to meet expectations and needs of the funder, including reporting, scheduling and execution of meetings and events. The position serves as EDI coordinator for the FES program, developing and implementing new opportunities for promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion within the program, maintaining and enhancing existing programs, and forming EDI focused collaborations with relevant units at the UAlberta. The position will play an important role in ensuring FES is able to establish a successful legacy program upon the conclusion of its funding.

**Duties**

**Research Partnership Coordination**
- Provides operational support for development and execution of significant FES strategic research partnerships and facilitates formation of new partnerships.
- Develops a strong familiarity with all FES projects and researchers to facilitate rapid and accurate sharing of information with existing and potential research partners.
- Coordinates and attends meetings, produces and distributes meeting notes for key strategic initiatives and special projects as assigned by the Program Manager.
- Coordinates joint administrative meetings and events with the University of Calgary research partner, the Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low-Carbon Unconventional Resources (GRI), including facilitating joint research administration, events collaborating with GRI staff as needed in development and implementation of strategic activities.
- Identifies and qualifies potential research partnership opportunities for FES researchers, and presents them to the Program Manager for assessment.
