Transportation Museum Interpreter

A museum interpreter plays a crucial role in engaging visitors with the museum’s collections,
information, and history. Here are some key aspects of their work:
**Guided Tours and Engagement**:
- After training, interpreters lead group tours of the museum, providing visitors with a
cohesive and vibrant interpretation of the museum’s permanent collections.
- They engage visitors by sharing stories, historical context, and interesting facts related
to the artifacts and artworks on display.
- Interpreters create a bridge between the museum content and the audience, making
the experience more meaningful and enjoyable.
- They support all aspects of the Museum operation including, support of special
events, aiding in admissions and the museum shop
- Managing the general public safety while on the grounds
- Maintaining cleanliness of public facing and ship spaces
- Lead School programs as needed (training provided)
- Other duties as assigned
**Qualifications**:
- High school education or equivalent and/or commensurate work experience.
- Comfortable speaking to groups of children, adults, and other audiences.
- Ability to adapt and interpret information to groups of all ages and abilities.
- Good time management skills.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively with shipboard preservationists, volunteers,
other interpreters, and ISM staff.
- Flexibility, patience, friendly, and a good sense of humor.
- Ability to work outdoors and onboard the historic ships during the peak of summer weather
and temperatures.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as necessary.
- Asset (But not mandatory) would be speaking another language, First Aid and WHIMIS
training
