Professional Writing Tutor

**NOTE: This is a temporary position ending on or before April 30, 2024.**

Professional writing tutors work with clients (mostly NAIT students) on improving writing skills via one-on-one appointments, group appointments, workshops, and drop-in tutoring sessions. Tutoring may occur virtually or in-person in the NAIT Writing Centre. Professional tutors also create virtual learning supports as well as mentor and coach peer tutors.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Develop and deliver writing workshops.
- Maintain and develop virtual writing resources.
- Mentor and support peer writing tutors
- Help NAIT students from all program areas understand writing assignments and develop and plan writing processes, including:

- Organizing ideas, developing arguments, and creating strong thesis statements and topic sentences.
- Integrating primary & secondary sources.
- Review essays, research papers, lab reports, and other types of writing for flow, clarity, and conciseness.
- Coach students to adopt effective writing and self-editing strategies.
- Discuss with international and multilingual students about Canadian writing conventions and academic expectations.
- Visit classrooms and promote the Writing Centre services.

**Skills & Abilities**:

- Writing, research, and communication skills.
- Significant knowledge of grammar and punctuation rules.
- Knowledge of writing center theory, pedagogy, and practice.
- Knowledge of content development methods, techniques, and practices.
- Ability to assess student tutoring needs
- Ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups.

**Qualifications**:

- Successful completion of a diploma program.
- Minimum 1-year tutoring experience at a post-secondary learning/writing center.
- Experience working with ESL/EAL students.

**Remuneration**: $26.46 - $33.13 hourly, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation pay. (Classification - Tutor II).
- This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement._
