The role of HSE Manager will be to lead the Canadian Health and Safety efforts from our Calgary, Alberta location, where your experience with a robust Health and Safety Management System will support the needs of a growing directional drilling company. You will work directly with the HSE team members, operations management and field personnel to help ensure Health and Safety goals and objectives are understood and consistently achieved.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide HSE leadership to operations management and employees in areas of:
- OHS regulatory standards and compliance strategies
- Client policies and standards
- Company policies, procedures, and standards
- Ensure investigation and analyses of incidents, near misses and identified hazards,
- Formulate (in collaboration with Operations Management) regional or divisional HSE goals, objectives, standards and procedures.
- Understand how the business is impacted by local, provincial, and federal OHS rules and regulations and provides accurate interpretation of same to operations managers.
- Conduct periodic inspections (and reports) of company facilities and equipment.
- Prepare investigation reports, as required by Altitude’s standards and / or requirements of clients, regulatory agencies or insurance underwriters.
- Assist in the administration of a substance abuse prevention programs.
- Ensure implementation of an effective return-to-work program for any injured worker.
- Coordinate regional training and awareness programs.
- Coordinate annual Certificate of Recognition (COR) maintenance and external audits or action plans.
- Ensure the development of Emergency Response Plans for facilities and field locations in collaboration with regional management and staff.
- Recommend corrective actions and monitors the status of implementation and effectiveness.
- Facilitate the collection, reporting and distribution of regional HSE statistical and KPI data
- Undertake special projects as and if the need arises.
- Ensure that employee HSE records of compliance are maintained, up-to-date and accessible.

- Expert knowledge of Health and Safety Management Systems.
- Basic knowledge of Workers’ Compensation policies and procedures (multi-jurisdictional).
- Ability to effectively respond to common HSE inquiries from employees, clients and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to advise employees (including management) on matters that impact their operations.
- Ability to effectively prepare and present information to employees, management or clients.
- Fluently speak, writes and comprehends English.
- Expert knowledge of investigation / corrective actions processes.
- Accustomed to developing detail work plans and schedules.
- Ability to work collaboratively with management at different levels within the organization and across organizational boundaries.
- Ability to delegate, monitor and provide constructive feedback.
- Ability to work within time and budget constraints.
- Functions equally well in a general office environment or at job site locations and field offices.
- Ability to establish and build healthy working relations and partnerships with management, coworkers, clients, vendors and regulatory representatives (stakeholders).
- Ability to form, build and manage an effective team.
- Knowledge of current approaches, tools, and techniques for gaining the cooperation and support of others.
- Meticulous about maintaining high quality records.
- Expert level knowledge of provincial OHS regulations.
- Basic knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations (federal and provincial).
- Ability and desire to train and mentor others.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Designation as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), or equivalent.
- Ten years in a HSE practitioner / leadership role in oil and gas.
- Certified Energy Safety Canada auditor (internal or external).
- Post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, or related discipline.
- Driver license in good standing.
- Valid passport (travel to USA required)
