Reporting to the Manager, Research Services, with oversight from the Assistant Dean Research, the Research Laboratory Coordinator ensures the efficient, safe, orderly and equitable coordination of NOSM University’s research laboratories. On a day-to-day basis, this positions assists with maintenance, compliance and overall proper running of the state-of-the-art biomedical research laboratory, as well as coordinating the use of the dry laboratory.

This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU Unit 677 Collective Agreement (Unit 2). A copy is available on the NOSM University website.

**Responsibilities**:
Tasks may include but are not limited to, the following:

- Coordinates the maintenance of the laboratory facilities, ensuring that laboratory equipment is maintained in good working order by monitoring the state of equipment, performing or arranging for preventive maintenance and/or repairs as necessary. Keeps an inventory of equipment, repairs and service contracts that is updated on an annual basis.
- Supports the Assistant Dean Research and the research faculty with planning for purchases of new or replacement equipment to support the research infrastructure.
- Maintains an up-to-date list of vendors and suppliers.
- Communicates and negotiates with vendors to secure quotes on multi-user equipment owned by NOSM University.
- Coordinates the purchase and installation of laboratory equipment
- Orders and maintains an up-to-date inventory of communal laboratory supplies.
- Assists with the development and updating of the laboratory’s annual budget, and ensures expenditures are within the laboratory’s operating budget.
- Assists with the development of policies and procedures related to the proper use and maintenance of the laboratory and research equipment and communicates these policies and procedures to stakeholders.
- Coordinates the storage, usage and disposal of biohazards, chemical and radioactive materials.
- Coordinates allocations, scheduling and usage of the laboratory work areas and equipment
- Monitors laboratory regulatory compliance with institutional and agency safety policies and reports any discrepancies to the Manager, Research Services or designate.
- Works in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other health and safety related legislation and standards.
- Trains and provides technical support relating to the use of laboratory equipment to laboratory users. Ensures laboratory users comply with required training.
- Conducts public tours of the research laboratory upon request.
- Liaises with Universities, agencies and other partners, as well as research faculty, to support NOSM University research activities.
- Is an active member of the NOSM U Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, the Lab Users Group, as well as other committees where required (eg. Biosafety committee).
- Maintains an up-to-date wet laboratory Safety Handbook
- Maintains an up-to-date list of wet and dry laboratory users
- Performs other duties as assigned

**Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- A Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline (biology, chemistry or other related health science discipline) from a recognized Canadian institution with accreditation is required or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Biosafety Level II Training Certification

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:

- Minimum of three (3) years of related experience in an academic biomedical research laboratory environment is required.
- Experience working with computer systems and software such as Windows, Internet, E-mail, Microsoft Excel, Word etc.
- Experience in coordinating various tasks under tight deadlines
- Experience conducting scientific experiments and research
- Experience developing and working with biohazard safety protocols and procedures and specialized laboratory equipment
- Radiation Use and Safety Training
- Chemical Hazard Training
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build cooperative relationships and rapport with internal and external stakeholders.
- Communicate effectively using a variety of media
- Work within established practices, protocols and policies

**Language**:

- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
