Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Sustainability, the Project Officer, Zero Waste Initiatives is responsible for overall administration and continuous improvement of the Zero Waste Sheridan program across Sheridan’s campuses, including efforts to reduce waste generation, increase waste diversion rate, and promote materials recovery and circularity of resources while striving for Sheridan’s long-term zero waste vision. The Project Officer manages the three-stream waste bin program (landfill, mixed recycling, organics), including use of quantitative and qualitative sources to identify and act upon opportunities to increase materials diversion, reduce contamination, and ensure operational success. The Project Officer also maintains relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders to enhance and expand Sheridan’s waste diversion programs and materials recovery/circularity initiatives. In consultation with the Manager, Corporate Sustainability and Office for Sustainability colleagues, the Project Officer supports the development and execution of Zero Waste Sheridan communication strategy and engagement tactics that aim to build operational credibility and business case for year-over-year waste reduction initiatives and promote waste reduction behaviours at the individual, departmental, and College-wide levels.

What You’ll be Doing

Supporting the development of project plans and new proposals for zero waste initiatives that support materials recovery, circularity of resources, and zero waste innovation across Sheridan campuses

Developing organics separation strategy and on-site composting program;
Operationalizing process for diverting unwanted Sheridan assets from landfill (e.g., reusing, repurposing, donating);
Coordinating and overseeing Mission Zero reuse initiatives, including collection, sorting, and tracking of donations;
Partnering with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate donation drives and materials collection;
Coordinating with Facilities Construction & Design Team to develop waste diversion process for construction and demolition waste and unwanted fixtures/furniture;
Supporting development of new funding proposals for projects or technology testing;
Driving execution and ongoing monitoring of three-stream zero waste bin program (landfill, mixed recycling, organics) to ensure operational success and deliver on waste diversion targets;
Leading deployment of Zero Waste Sheridan bin clusters and signage across departments and faculties;
Using quantitative and qualitative sources to identify and act upon opportunities to increase materials diversion and reduce contamination (e.g., improved signage, bin placement, etc.);
Serving as Office for Sustainability liaison with waste hauler and other recycling service providers, collaborating for ongoing improvements in waste reduction and coordinating pick up/service requests as needed and in accordance with any relevant contractual agreements;
Training and consulting with “back of house” staff to improve separation and handling of waste from bins;
Implementing waste auditing strategy with support from Work-Integrated-Learning (WIL) placements in coordination with relevant faculty/staff;
Collaborating with Office for Sustainability and Facilities Services staff to develop, implement, measure against, and continuously improve the Zero Waste Sheridan Plan;
Defining goals, business case, implementation tactics/policies/procedures, assessment metrics and reporting activities; Measuring progress against the goals and assessment metrics within the plan;
Identifying and pursuing sources of funding and partnerships for Zero Waste Sheridan initiatives (e.g., NGO, Municipal, Provincial/Federal, corporate sponsorship, advertising, cost recovery, etc.);
Coordinate data gathering and completion of annual waste management-related compliance reporting (e.g., RPRA Blue Box Program, Stewardship Ontario, annual waste audit (ON 102/94) and source separation plan (ON 103/94));
Collaborating with others and provide training to ensure that the campus community is educated, aware, and continually improving their behavior to achieve zero waste goals;
Organizing and supporting the work of a cross-departmental Zero Waste Implementation Task Force to foster decision-making frameworks that minimize waste to landfill and increase circularity of resources, looking upstream (i.e., materials brought on to Sheridan campuses) and downstream (i.e., materials leaving Sheridan campuses);
Developing and coordinating experiential learning/living laboratory opportunities to educate Sheridan community about zero waste initiatives;
Performing other related duties, as assigned.
