**Basic Function**:
The Pest Control Technician will provide safe, effective, preventive and responsive Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to control pests (including wildlife, vermin, insects, and others) for Toronto Zoo animals under care, food services, and other areas on site.

**Responsibilities**:
Must follow and adhere to the regulations under the Ontario Pesticides Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Ontario (OHSA).

Develops and implements strategies to preclude food sources and harborage for pests around animals under our care, horticulture areas and food service areas on site.

Maintain and adhere to the standards for AZA, CCAC and ACRC compliance.

Maintains direct communication with Wildlife Health, Wildlife Care, Facilities and Infrastructure management and other teams on pest control problems, including written and electronic reports.

Acts as on-grounds contact with City of Toronto Public Health and contracted services for mosquito deterrence and control.

Responsible for unloading, storage, inventory rotation, safe and appropriate expired waste discard, and ordering chemical and mechanical pest control supplies. Maintain an organized workspace and work vehicle.

Demonstrated knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in cleaning and ability to work safely with potentially dangerous and toxic chemicals.

Safely, legally and efficiently applies chemical agents for the control of pest organisms and humane trapping and release (lethal and capture depending on species) of vermin, including disposing of carcasses in an appropriate manner following Ministry requirements.

As it relates to pest control management (PCM), PCM is responsible for animal transport and deliveries in regard to nuisance wildlife transport, both on and off zoo grounds.

Provides routine and requested updates to IPM protocols and SDS reviews for pest control products.

Adheres to established Toronto Zoo policies and procedures.

Assist in grounds clean up and removal of pest nuisances.

Assist other facilities team members and/or Zoo contractors as needed.

All duties that pertain to pest control techniques/procedures (hot wire, bird sound deterrent, light deterrent), including development of management strategies.

Must demonstrate knowledge of occupational hazards involved and the safe work practices to employ while in the proximity of potentially dangerous animals.

Must adhere to all health and safety policies as outlined by the Zoo, including use of all proper PPE.

Reports to the supervisor the absence of or any defect in any equipment or protective device that they are aware of and which may endanger themselves or another staff member.

Reports to supervisor any contravention of the Ontario Health & Safety Act.

Ensures all accidents and hazards are reported to supervisor immediately.

Work in a safe manner at all times in compliance with Health & Safety, WHMIS and Toronto Zoo policies and procedures. Perform all duties in compliance with industry standards including AZA, Occupational Health & Safety Act, legislated regulations, and recommended equipment/manufacturer’s guidelines.

Follows all branch instructions.

Attends appropriate training courses as required.

Other related duties as requested by Supervisor or their designate.

**Qualifications**:
Must have valid Land, Structural and Water Exterminator license from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation & Parks.

Must continuously maintain training to uphold industry standards for regulations and safety.

Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions, and otherwise communicate effectively and efficiently with all staff including management.

Very good knowledge of computer programs of basic word processing, spreadsheets, and internet database access, and comfort with data entry.

Must possess ability to work on own and have excellent organizational skills.

Good interpersonal skills including the ability to get along with all staff and Toronto Zoo guests with professionalism.

Experience in sensitive environments, such as a zoo, aquarium, hospital, food handling establishments, or school, or like institution, is required.

Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position including,

Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time.

Ability to work in an environment involving heights.

Ability to perform a variety of physical tasks that
