Location: Edmonton
Job Type**:12-month temporary opportunity**
Full or Part-time: Full-time

**About Us**:
The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) is an Office of the Legislature. Our Office provides advocacy for children and youth receiving or seeking to receive services under the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act_ and the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_, and youth involved with the youth justice system. The OCYA is also responsible for providing legal representation for young people in matters related to the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act_ and the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_. The OCYA conducts investigations and reports on issues arising from the serious injury to or death of a young person. The OCYA engages stakeholders in understanding the importance of respecting young people’s individual and collective rights, interests, and viewpoints, as well as delivers public education.

The impact of colonialism continues to adversely affect Indigenous young people, their families, and their communities. Intergenerational trauma, systemic racism, and the legacy of residential schools are experienced by many Indigenous young people, who continue to be overrepresented in the child intervention system. The OCYA is deeply committed to reconciliation, and a diverse and inclusive public service that reflects the population we serve to best meet the needs of Albertans. We are committed to a workplace that welcomes, respects and values the diversity of our employees. We also support them to be actively engaged in the workplace and the work we do to meet the needs of Alberta's young people.

**Role**:
The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) is currently hiring an Indigenous Engagement Consultant for our Edmonton office (12-month temporary opportunity). This position plays a unique role in the organization where strong relationship skills, communication and a passion for young people are essential.

In this role, you will identify opportunities to build on existing relationships, and enhance the OCYA’s connections with Indigenous communities, including Indigenous young people, to build awareness of the OCYA’s programs, services, and mandate. You will assist the OCYA as we adhere to the federal legislation, _An Act Respecting First Nation, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families_, by ensuring you are aware of upcoming shifts in authority, connect the OCYA with Indigenous communities to ensure mutual awareness of the of the changes, demonstrate OCYA’s support in the shifts to authority, and provide timely and robust advice internally. You will also support engagement with Indigenous young people and communities throughout Alberta on various OCYA initiatives.

A secondary element of the position, the Indigenous Engagement Consultant works collaboratively to increase the OCYA’s capacity to provide Indigenous culturally appropriate services and supports. You will work with the OCYA Knowledge Keeper in building the capacity of the OCYA through the promotion of Indigenous knowledge and staff training/engagement opportunities.

**Qualifications**:
University graduation in a related field plus 4 years of related experience in areas such as: Indigenous engagement; Indigenous relations; community and youth engagement; facilitation; development/delivery of public education presentations; project coordination; services for vulnerable youth, youth justice, or child and family services.

Due to the unique and specialized knowledge and experience this position requires, preference will be given to individuals who self-identify and are known to others as Indigenous or who have extensive experience working directly with Indigenous people and communities.

**APS Competencies**:
