**Position Overview**

The Optical Imaging Technician will support an optical microscopy resource laboratory within the Cumming School of Medicine. Although the operations fall under the auspices of the Snyder Institute, the imaging laboratory is also accessible to other researchers across campus, from the biomedical sector, and from other institutions nationally and internationally.

This position reports to the Director of the Live Cell Imaging Laboratory. The position involves possible exposure to chemical, biological, electrical, and optical hazards.

**Position Description**

**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
Technical
- Follow and enforce established programs and procedures for the safe and proper use of equipment and materials in the imaging labs
- Continuous input for developing and streamlining of program and procedures
- Trouble-shoot microscopes and support equipment
- Support the Senior Optical Imaging Specialist with the testing, validation, and maintenance of standard procedures and technical notes for training, operation, and troubleshooting of equipment
- Train and help researchers with optical technologies
- Train users to carry out image processing and analysis
- Provide technical advice to users about optical technologies
- Test and maintain imaging systems
- Maintain and test mammalian cell lines and primary culture, as the need arises
- Carry out immunofluorescence and live-cell assays
- As needed will support technical work in the related Mouse Phenomics Core

Client Relations
- Communicate promptly and clearly to researchers about equipment and software upgrades, changes, or failures
- Communicate with equipment and supply manufacturers for purchasing, technical advice, service visits etc.
- Clients are courteously provided with information and advice about or programs and/or services

Program Management
- Preparation and maintenance of educational content and communication materials (website, learning materials for users)
- Assist in organizing a campus-wide optical microscopy seminar series
- Assist in organizing a national microscopy course

Analysis and Reporting
- Collate and organize scheduling and usage records
- Document equipment usage and issues
- Assist Snyder Research Operations Specialist with invoicing and billing

**Qualifications / Requirements**:

- BSc or technical diploma with working experience in a laboratory setting (research or industrial)
- MSc and graduate research is an asset
- At least 3 to 5 years of experience with optical microscopy desirable (research, medical technology, industry etc.)
- A combination of education and experience will be considered
- Demonstrable theoretical and practical knowledge of optical microscopy desirable
- Working knowledge of image processing and analysis. Experience with ImageJ/FIJI desirable
- Ability to trouble-shoot instrumentation required
- Experience in a microscope core facility setting is desirable
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Experience working with live cell assays desirable
- Experience with immunofluorescence sample preparation required
- GLP and GMP experience desirable
- Experience with cell culture and standard molecular techniques required
