**Position Summary**:
concerns involving animals (companion, livestock, wildlife) within the City of Winnipeg.

Handling sensitive and urgent issues related to animal welfare with a diverse set of
stakeholders while remaining objective, effective, and diplomatic. Obtains, and

supporting their Animal Protection Officer (APO) colleagues in enforcing provisions with

**Purpose**:
This position requires working in a Team capacity following established procedures and

best practices responding to the requirements of animals in need, while respecting the

policies and protocols of Winnipeg Humane Society as an organization. These duties

and responsibilities are in addition to the daily tasks directed by WHS APOs, as well as

IER Dispatchers, to successfully manage calls from the Public in responding to Animal

Welfare concerns.

ERs will represent the WHS and Manitoba’s Animal Welfare Program in all matters
related to the humane treatment of all animals in a professional and measured manner

as well as responding to emergencies quickly and safely.

Keeping the mission of the Winnipeg Humane Society in the forefront when performing

job duties as well as when representing the WHS both inside and outside of the shelter

environment.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Awareness of the policies of Manitoba’s Animal Welfare Program as well as

understand the Animal Care Act of Manitoba (The Act) and the applicable
Regulations.
- Retrieve phone messages concerning animal welfare, investigations and return

calls to determine what types of action needs to be taken.
- Respond in a safe driving manner to all complaint reports, animal welfare calls

and investigations calls, which may involve injured, distressed, or abandoned
companion animals, including some wildlife species.
- Provide a basic assessment as to the severity of the animal’s condition and

document such information.
- Assist APOs during Inspections under The Act
- Prepare accurate and timely reports, both written and oral, to account for time

while on duty in Winnipeg Humane Society required format. All written

documentation is admissible in legal proceedings and should be discussed with

APOs when documents are Case specific.

- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Maintain situational awareness to ensure both personal and team safety.
- Respond to emergencies such as floods or fire where animals are affected.
- Assist in animal emergency calls where injured or distressed animals are in

question.
- Assist in picking up confined, stray/owned/foster animals, supplies, donations,

correspondence, etc. within jurisdiction and as assigned.
- Process animals and enter all information regarding each animal into the

computer database.
- Check lost and found registry to help match stray animals with their owners.
- Vaccinate, microchip, and deworm animals prior to assigning to cage in shelter.
- Assist with other WHS departments, specifically providing shelter medications or

feeding, when weather or other emergency conditions prevent key staff from

getting to WHS.
- Ensure the safety and security of all animals within the care of the Winnipeg

Humane Society.
- Aid in the proper care and feeding of the animal population within the shelter

and satellite locations.
- Attend staff training sessions as required with pay.
- Ensure timely maintenance and safe use of vehicles and other equipment.
- Adhere to the laws of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act when carrying out duties

in WHS vehicles.
- Assist with the daily operation of the IER Department ensuring files and

transmissions are complete and accurate, offering guidance in a cooperative
manner to colleagues where deficiencies are noted.
- Report unacceptable behaviour, work practices, or deficiencies which are not

corrected after providing guidance, by ANY Department Staff member to the
