Job Summary

The LSI is a UBC Research Institute supported by the UBC faculties of Medicine and Science. It is home to the research programs of approximately 90 Principal Investigators from four faculties and over 15 departments, who research a wide variety of life science topics. The advertised position reports to the LSI Director and works closely with LSI Principal Investigators, research staff, and trainees as required.

The Research Sustainability Manager will serve as the primary point of contact for the entire building, specifically addressing all aspects of our sustainability practices and initiatives. The role also involves aiding in sustainable lab decommissioning when faculty retire by posting equipment on the UBC Re-use website, providing information, scheduling meetings, and arranging pick-ups while managing the disposal of chemical and biohazardous waste left in freezers and fridges. Responsibilities include assisting with CFIA/PHAC forms (controlled substances and biosafety level lab clearance), equipment disposal and recycling, and coordinating with wing managers.

This position requires a dedicated individual who promotes sustainable practices within a wet lab setting, maintaining an open, communicative, and enthusiastic approach. The manager will be centrally located on-site, acting as the liaison for UBC Sustainability Coordinator and Green Labs updates, such as shut-the-sash challenges, green funding opportunities, bike-to-work week, and other initiatives to educate and engage lab personnel about sustainability. Additionally, they will support labs in achieving "My Green Lab" certification in the future.

Organizational Status

The advertised position reports to the LSI Director and works closely with the LSI Administration and Operations Manager and the LSI Principal Investigators, Research staff, and Trainees as required.

Work Performed

1. Strategic Planning and Implementation
- Manage the onboarding of new LSI PIs and their new lab staff
- Develop, establish and manage the implementation of sustainability strategies and policies for the LSI.
- Collaborate with senior management to align sustainability initiatives with the LSI's overall goals, including the Climate Action Plan 2030 goals for carbon footprint, green-house gases emission, waste reduction (single-use plastic, personal protective equipment, old/broken or outdated scientific instruments, chemical and biohazardous waste.
- Create and oversee sustainability programs and projects.
- Conduct research on sustainability best practices, trends, and emerging technologies to integrate at LSI.
- Analyze and report on the institute’s sustainability performance and impact.
- Identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable resource use.

2. Management and Collaboration
- Lead and manage sustainability projects from inception to completion.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including vendors, researchers, staff and trainees.
- Implement strategies for efficient resource use, including energy, water, and materials.
- Develop and promote recycling and waste management programs.
- Participate in the budget forecasting and preparation
- Serves on various LSI sustainability advisory committees that advance institutes' strategic planning

3. Education and Outreach
- Develop and deliver training programs and workshops on green and sustainability practices throughout LSI.
- Promote awareness of sustainability initiatives within the LSI and the broader community.
- Create and disseminate LSI-specific educational materials on sustainability topics

4. Reporting and Compliance
