Mohawk College is currently recruiting for our next

**Learning Support Specialist**

Under the direction of the Academic Manager, Community Partnerships and Learning (CP&L), the incumbent performs duties associated with the academic and service operation of programs, courses and workshops delivered through access strategies including Early College. The Early College initiative provides a diversified learning model for students who wish to complete secondary school and begin or complete postsecondary education at the same time.

The incumbent is expected to provide a high-quality standard of service, recognizing the diverse range and needs of in-risk secondary school students as well as adults in the process of completing secondary school. The incumbent will work collaboratively with participants, faculty, staff, and School College Work Initiative and community partners to enhance the learning for those enrolled in the variety of Early College and City School programming.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:
**Assess the learning and educational needs, strengths, and goals of individual participants**:

- Research specific types of learning styles, resources, and other supports to best address individual needs.
- Meet with students to discuss challenges or difficulties with assignments/assessments.
- Work with participants to explore appropriate learning strategies.
- Maintain accurate notes on student learning style, approach, comfort level with technology, and modify strategies and supports in a timely manner.
- Monitor student progress throughout programming and evaluate supports and services regularly to ensure student success.

**Learning Support - the incumbent will ensure that all learning support interventions are timely, effective and appropriate to address individual student need**:

- Develop individual learning support solutions to support a wide range of participant needs and goals.
- Monitor participant progress toward personal goals, and where applicable refer participant for additional support.
- Work closely with staff, faculty, and partner organizations to alter basic learning materials and other supports to better meet the needs and goals of participants.

**Plan and coordinate events and activities to support learning and positive educational outcomes**:

- Workshops to develop effective study skills, improve time management, identify valuable note taking strategies and tools.
- Improve group work dynamics and presentation skills.
- Deliver group and individual learning modules that encourage increased use of technology in the classroom and work environment.
- Design strategic sessions on tackling assignments, effective exam preparation and strengthening writing skills.

**Plan and coordinate events and activities to support postsecondary and career pathways**:

- Presentations to inform financing options for postsecondary.
- Workshops to explore postsecondary program options.
- Presentations to explore apprenticeship pathways.
- Presentations to inform on student services available at Mohawk College and other postsecondary institutions of interest to participants.
- Presentations on community employment services and career pathways.

**Reporting and Evaluation**:

- Ensure all participant learning support records are accurate and up-to-date.
- Collect and maintain data on participant attendance, progress and supports required.
- Produce reports for management review that highlight strategies and identify areas for development.
- Be an effective member of the CP&L team to share results and collaborate on new departmental initiatives.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:
The successful applicant must have:

- A minimum of a three-year diploma or degree in related fields of Education, Social Work, Human Services, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated community-based experience working with diverse client/student groups.
- Demonstrated competence and experience in an educational or another relevant human service setting.
