Canadian Credit Union Association (CCUA) is the national trade association for the Canadian credit union industry. Canada's credit unions are vital competitors in the financial services industry.
As the national voice and national forum for Canada's credit union, CCUA actively leads and participates in initiatives to build successful, competitive, and growing credit unions in Canada. Our team of experts are called on to provide support to our members through strong advocacy, expert research and the provision of value-add services.
To achieve this, we hire talented and driven people interested in working in a dynamic part of the financial services industry in Canada. We are currently hiring for a Policy Analyst, Government Relations (Atlantic Canada).
The Policy Analyst is responsible for developing policy positions and implementing government relations strategies in support of industry priorities. The role aids the Regional Director in developing and implementing the CCUA’s government relations work-plan for the Atlantic Region. This includes working with credit unions to develop policy positions on industry issues and building relationships with legislators, government officials and regulators in order to advance the sector’s priorities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
**Deliverables and Main Supporting Activities**:
1.Policy Analysis
Support the development of policy positions and strategies through research, writing, and analysis.
- Develops policy submissions that influence legislation and regulation in support of the cooperative financial sector. This includes working with member credit unions to understand challenges and opportunities and helping build consensus.
- Perform cross-jurisdictional analysis through independent research and through working with colleagues at CCUA. This includes contributing to the Atlantic Region’s perspective to cross-jurisdictional policy priorities.
- Create briefings for internal and external senior leaders on key policy development initiatives or issues of impact to the sector.
- Proactively identify policy issues of significance to the competitiveness of the credit union sector. This includes monitoring industry trends and news sources to identify emerging issues.
- Track and support on the progress of government consultations and legislation.
2. Stakeholder Engagement
Collaborate with government and credit union stakeholders to facilitate communication, advocate for the needs of the sector and ensure the development of strong stakeholder relationships.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Credit Unions in the Atlantic Region of Canada.
- Support regional, provincial and external stakeholders in building closer linkages to amplify the efforts of CCUA and its members.
- Provide regular communication updates to key stakeholders, by working closely with CCUA’s internal communications team on government relations updates.
- Collaborate with credit unions and government relations teams to successfully advocate for and obtain government commitments.
- Facilitate administration of internal member committees and working groups. This includes regularly liaising with credit unions’ senior leaders and their staff.
- Attend events (sometimes outside regular work hours) to represent the CCUA at industry-relevant meetings and credit union events.
Communication
**Internal**:
- Liaise with counterparts within the organization and external government relations staff.
- Communication with peers at CCUA to problem solve and determine best courses of action.
- Primarily with government relations staff in other regions to coordinate and collaborate on government relations advocacy and public policy efforts.
**External**:
- Communicate with credit unions, provincial government officials, regulators and other stakeholders to understand their concerns and priorities and build broad consensus when developing policy initiatives.
- Regular communication with Atlantic Central staff, especially Legal, Communications, and Corporate Services teams.
- Communicate with legislators and regulators to increase awareness of the credit union sector and achieve positive outcomes for the credit union sector.
- Plan networking events to increase the profile of the credit union sector and facilitate relationship building with senior government representatives.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as social sciences, economics, political science, or public policy.
- Master’s degree in social sciences, ideally in economics, political science, or public policy and/or a financial accreditation (CMA, CPA or CFA) is considered an asset
Experience
- 3 years in a related field
- Experience gained from within government or crown agencies is considered an asset
