Introduction African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker will work primarily with African Nova Scotian students, providing support to them and their families in making schooling a positive experience. The goal of the African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker is to help African Nova Scotia students achieve academic success, improve their self
- esteem and remain in school by fostering a positive environment of good will, respect and dignity among students, parent/guardians, school administration, teachers and all community members. The African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker will promote a school climate that is safe, supportive, and respectful and that connects African Nova Scotian students to a broad array of school and community resources.
The African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker will require a high degree of professionalism and confidentially working in this environment. The African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker is based in a school (or schools) and is usually required to work outside of regular school hours an average of ten hours per month.-Minimum Requirements - Completion of a post-secondary diploma or certificate in Human Services, Social Services or a relate field.
- An equivalent combination of education/experience may be considered in lieu of a diploma/degree program.
- Experience working with the African Nova Scotian communities, with particular emphasis on African Nova Scotian youth.
- Being a person of African/Indigenous descent.

- Knowledge of issues facing African Nova Scotian within the context of education and schooling
- Knowledge of how race, class and gender and other forms of discrimination impact African Nova Scotian youth
- Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively as part of a team involving students, school administration, teachers, parents/guardians, support agencies and surrounding communities
- Ability to work and to follow through with assigned tasks independently
- Above average interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of the community served by the schools and to attend related community meetings
- Knowledge of, experience in, and a commitment to the principles of race relations, cross-cultural understanding and human rights
- Knowledge and experience in mediation and conflict resolution
- Ability and desire to engage in continuing education and skills development

A valid Nova Scotia's driver's license and or access to a properly insured vehicle is required to service the multiple school sites.
