The Laboratory Manager provides operational and administrative leadership and technical guidance to all staff and student/trainees in the laboratories within the Departments of the BC Cancer Research Centre. The Laboratory Manager is directly accountable to the Department Head or designate for all operational and scientific issues in the laboratories. Responsibilities include developing, writing and ensuring compliance with Standard Operating procedures, monitoring levels of equipment usage, acquisition of instruments and oversight of instrument maintenance and hiring of laboratory staff in consultation with department leadership.
**What you'll do**
- Work closely with the Administrative Manager or designate to ensure accurate financial data on operational costs and options are available. Acquiree capital equipment and oversee instrument maintenance. Monitor level of equipment usage in the laboratory, oversee facility planning for the laboratory space and make recommendations regarding infrastructure requirements.
- Works in collaboration with investigators and staff across the BC Cancer Research Centre (BCCRC), BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) and the Provincial Health Services Authorities (PHSA) to ensure coordination of activities involving the Department’s resources and maintenance of defined laboratory operational budget expenditures.
- In consultation with the Department Head, develop written policies and procedures for quality management initiatives and ensure policies and procedures are followed. Supervise technicians and trainees within the laboratories and ensure proper adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all users of the laboratory space.
- Provide training to all staff, students and other users of the department’s laboratory space to ensure compliance with safety standards as mandated by WorkSafeBC, University of British Columbia (UBC) and PHSA/BCCA/BCCRC. Ensure incident reports and complaints are filed, reviewed and followed up and ensure required certifications (Ethics, Radiation, Biohazard etc) and renewals are applied for and received in a timely fashion as required.
- Develop goals and objectives in alignment with the individual investigators and trainees within the department and ensure professional standards for all staff in the department are understood, monitored and maintained. Monitor the department’s plans and operations and measure progress towards these goals and objectives in conjunction with the Administrative Manager.
**What you bring**
- A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor of Science in a related discipline
- Seven (7) years’ of experience in a research or laboratory environment with five of those years in a leadership capacity.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, coupled with excellent organization and project management skills.
- Ability to supervise.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong time management and the ability to multi-task with multiple priorities.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and independently with mínimal supervision and/or direction as part of the management team.
- Demonstrated analytical, negotiation and problem solving skills.
- Advanced knowledge of laboratory products and equipment and an in-depth knowledge of WHMIS, WCB and Occupational Health and Safety standards.

- Work collaboratively with appropriate Indigenous teams/departments to ensure ICS lens applied holistically.
- Have commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
