Halifax, Canada Language and Literacy Lab at Dalhousie University Full time

The Language and Literacy Lab is an interdisciplinary team of researchers which supports a large-scale research program dedicated to understanding the skills children and adults need to achieve full literacy. This work is incredibly impactful with widespread economic and societal benefits as Statistics Canada data show that 40% of Canadians lack the basic literacy skills needed to fully participate in society. This experience includes extensive training and will be highly valuable for a career in psychology and/or biology, as well as provide highly transferable skills for any professional work environment.

**Duties and responsibilities**
- Administer experimental and standardized language and literacy tasks to children in a variety of settings such as schools and in the lab.
- Communicate with families, schools, and other partners in the research.
- Participate in meetings, as requested.
- Assist in the development of research tasks.
- Handle program experimental tasks for computer administration.
- Write protocols for task administration.
- Code, enter, clean, and analyze data.
- Conduct systematic literature reviews.
- Conduct experiments with adults.
- Disseminate research findings through the creation of infographics, meeting, and conference presentations, and prepare written manuscripts.
- Create and share social media posts related to literacy.
- Support the Lab Director in supervising the volunteer team and other research assistants.
- Support other administrative and research tasks as needed.

**Required qualifications**
- Completed an Undergraduate degree in Arts or Science with a major or minor in Psychology, Biology, or other related degree/diploma/certificate (e,g, Linguistics, Child and Youth Care, Early Childhood Education, Behavioural Interventions).
- Previous experience working with children.
- Excellent communicator with the ability to maintain a professional demeanor.
- Possess strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills and have a demonstrated ability to build relationships and work proactively and effectively with others.
- Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel to schools in HRM and rural Nova Scotia as needed.
- Creative self-starter with a strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.
- Possess high regard for quality, accuracy, attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Excellent judgment and discretion in handling confidential and/or sensitive information
- Strong time management skills and the ability to handle multiple deadlines and concurrent activities.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record, Vulnerable Sector, and Child Abuse Registry checks.

**Assets**:

- Related experience working in a school environment, administering experimental and/or standardized tests, conducting systematic literature reviews, and/or using statistical software (e.g., SPSS).

The LLL is a well-resourced research lab that consists of a diverse and well-rounded team of postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students, volunteers, and research staff.
