**Location** - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in person. The in person component primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

**Working for the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute**

The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) detects large changes in biodiversity in Alberta with the annually updated Biodiversity Intactness Index and Human Footprint Inventory. This research provides ongoing, relevant, scientifically credible information on Alberta's living resources to meet the information needs of government planners, industrial developers and local communities.

**Position**

Working within the ABMI’s Geospatial Centre, the Air Photo Interpreter is responsible for supporting the ABMI's goal of enhancing environmental monitoring and reporting across the province by processing aerial imagery while producing associated training and validation data sets. The Air Photo Interpreter will interact with other ABMI staff on matters related to photogrammetric data processing, image interpretation, data quality assurance processes, and the creation of training and validation data sets.

**Duties**

1. Undertakes Project Work

Working with the Air Photo Interpretation Specialist, ABMI staff and collaborators, the Air Photo Interpreter will conduct project-specific work.
- Responsible for 3D air photo interpretation and quantification of vegetation (e.g., species, ecosite phases, plant communities, tree height) and surface features (e.g., topography, human footprint) to ABMI specifications
- Conducts digital image analysis through softcopy technology using multiple software packages for the creation of training and validation data sets to support machine learning modelling and classification tasks
- Conducts processing and final quality assurance of aerial photo data (e.g., aerial triangulation, stereo-models, orthorectification, mosaicking)
- Produces documentation and standard operating procedures (e.g., for vegetation regeneration mapping projects)
- Helps to ensure that production levels are met
- Manages GIS data sets and associated metadata
- Demonstrates understanding of the ecology of plant communities
- Assists with the conversions of Alberta Vegetation Inventory (AVI), Grassland Vegetation Inventory (GVI) and other data sources
- Ensures quality of provincial scale landcover products

2. Supports Management of Air Photo Interpretation Programs

In cooperation with the Air Photo Interpretation Specialist, supports development, planning and implementation of air photo interpretation program.
- Supports development of work plans related to air photo interpretation, supports implementation and tracks progress to provide regular status updates within project management software (e.g., ClickUp)
- Helps to estimate resources and equipment requirements to complete projects and availability of these to meet fluctuating schedules and priorities
- Assists with ensuring successful completion of components of project work plans on time through tracking deliverables and interdependencies, and ensuring open lines of communication across project teams
- Establishes, fosters and maintains relationships with staff across multiple ABMI centres to ensure working knowledge and advancement of ABMI’s air photo interpretation programs

3. Supports Knowledge Dissemination

Facilitates direct and indirect understanding of ABMI air photo interpreted data with scientists, the public and ABMI stakeholders.
