Equipment Operator 1

**Job Summary**:
Under the supervision of the Public Works Supervisor, the Equipment Operator 1 responsibilities are to; support Public Works projects by operating **skid steer with attachments, water truck, bucket truck, one-ton truck, roller packer and utility vehicles (UTV’s)** and other equipment, repair and maintain roads, sidewalks, ditches, grounds, and other RM property, assist in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices, act as a supporting crew member, perform general and preventative maintenance on RM equipment, and adhere to established municipal policies, procedures, safe work practices as well as Workplace Safety & Health Standards and regulations.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Support Public Works projects and responsibilities by;
- Operating heavy equipment such as **water truck, bucket truck, one-ton truck, roller packer, skid steer (with attachments**) **and utility vehicles (UTV’s),**:
- Operating other equipment such as grass cutting equipment, lawnmowers, jackhammers, chain saws, generators, compressors, tampers, rollers, and any other hand and power tools necessary to perform various daily tasks,
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings as required,
- Ensuring proper street grade, drainage construction and compaction,
- Adhering to all equipment manufacturer’s instructions, RM procedures and protocols.
- Repair and maintain roads, sidewalks**,** ditches, land and/or grounds owned/managed by the municipality by;
- Clearing snow from sidewalks and RM parking lots; adhering to guidelines set for sidewalk cleaning and sanding, or as instructed by supervisor,
- Digging ditches, culverts, holes,
- Loading and unloading stone, gravel and other material,
- Breaking concrete and removing debris,
- Preparing and cleaning worksites,
- Conducting lawn maintenance including grass cutting and trimming,
- Assisting with landscaping by tree planting, shoveling, trimming, weeding, sodding, rototilling, cleaning and watering.
- Assist in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices by;
- Routinely checking for malfunctioning/burnt out lights and reporting on same to ensure timely response,
- Performing routine installations and maintenance functions as required,
- Working safely at all times when installing or repairing devices.
- Act as a supporting crew member by;
- Assisting and guiding labourers, seasonal, term, temporary, probationary and student personnel in the absence of an RM supervisor/manager, or a higher classification Equipment Operator (2 or 3),
- Reporting all issues regarding staff to an RM supervisor or manager immediately.
- Perform general and preventive maintenance on equipment by;
- Cleaning, lubricating, checking levels (such as air, oil, water, and other),
- Replenishing air/fluids as required, and as per manufacturers recommended standards, or RM procedures,
- Maintaining accurate records of all repairs,
- Identifying and locking out any unsafe, or potentially unsafe equipment immediately.
- Adhere to established municipal policies, procedures, safe work practices as well as Workplace Safety & Health Standards and regulations.
**Special Requirements**:
- Accept Standby Time and Callback as required.
**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**:
- Thorough working knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles including the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
- Working knowledge and experience operating skid steer with attachments, water truck, bucket truck, one-ton truck, roller packer and utility vehicles (UTV’s).
- Working knowledge and experience in the safe use, operation and maintenance of various types of equipment.
- Knowledge of municipal policies and procedures pertaining to street and drainage system construction, maintenance, and improvement.
- Knowledge of achieving grade, drainage, proper compaction, street and drainage system construction techniques.
- Working knowledge of public works related manual labour tasks related to roads, ditches, and buildings.
- Ability to understand and follow specific verbal instruction.
- Ability to work independently under mínimal supervision, and also work effectively in a team environment.
- Physically capable of performing manual labour for extended periods of time; lifting up to 50 pounds frequently and 20 pounds consistently, working overhead and at heights, working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to accept Stand-by time and Callback is essential.
**Credentials and Experience**:
- Successful completion of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Province of Manitoba driver’s class five (5) license (with air endorsement considered an asset),
- Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience, or an equivalent combination of experience, training and education.
