Maintenance Worker 1

Under the general supervision of the Foreman 2, the Maintenance Worker 1 ensures all pesticide equipment is accurately calibrated and documented according to branch and legal specifications from the manufacturer and Pest Management Regulatory Agency for insecticides. Ensures equipment and machines remain functioning safely, effectively and attends to all breakdowns in a timely manner to ensure down time is at a minimum. Performs continual preventative maintenance/repairs on spray/small engine equipment used within the branch to ensure the safety of staff, citizens, and the environment. Build, repair, fabricate and assemble a variety of pesticide spray equipment to meet standards and improve operations. Trains and instructs staff on the operation of equipment.
**As the **_Maintenance Worker 1_** you will**:
- Maintain, repair, or arrange for the maintenance and repair, of all pesticide equipment including but not limited to, truck and ATV mounted sprayers, variety of liquid/hydraulic pumps, Chemical injectors, Granule Applicators w/blower, ULV Foggers, Manual/Motorized Liquid/Granule Backpacks, and tree sprayers.
- Build and/or fabricate, and assemble machines or mechanical components and parts according to requirements.
- Provide support to the Branch on pesticide equipment use.
- Conduct repairs for maximum reliability on small engines and also larger 4-6-cylinder engines, both gas and diesel, including carburetors, spark plugs, oil changes, starters, etc.
- Maintain an effective working relationship with other branches in the Public Works Department, other civic departments and outside businesses and agencies.
- Purchase equipment and supplies required for the repair and/or manufacturing of equipment.
- Perform related duties as required.
**Your education and qualifications include**:
- Senior 2 (Grade 10) education or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge with small engines and mechanics.
- Ability to take and successfully complete additional courses and training as determined by the Department including but not limited to:
- First Aid Certificate
- WHMIS/GHS
- Temporary Traffic Control
- ATV Training
- Foreman Level 1 Training
- Completion of a small engine course and/or licenced Mechanic certificate is preferred.
- Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot in a timely manner with mínimal supervision.
- Ability to train and instruct staff on the use and operation of equipment including troubleshooting for all breakdowns.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain equipment, hand tools and power tools consistent with the classification.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish work priorities and schedules.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precaution policies and regulations and the ability to adhere to and enforce safety rules and policies.
- Basic computer knowledge using a variety of software programs applicable to the duties of the position (e.g. MS Word and Excel).
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts/agencies and the public.
**Conditions of employment**:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Must participate in cholinesterase monitoring program which includes regular blood tests to ensure that cholinesterase levels are within safe limits.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License with the ability to upgrade to a Class 3.
- In accordance with Legislative or the Department’s requirements position must possess valid licenses, certification, or completion of courses as approved before appointment:
- Valid Manitoba Pesticide Applicators License (Core, Mosquito, and Landscape/Golf Course).
- **Please note that the Department will pay for your first attempt. Any additional re-writes will be at your own expense.**
- Must be physically able to perform duties of the job, which may include, but are not limited to: working outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions, lifting and moving equipment up to 50 lbs., and standing for prolonged periods of time.
- Must be able to work various shifts including night shifts, evenings, weekends, and extended hours as needed.
