**Department summary**

The Dean of Students’ Office supports all students — undergraduate and graduate — in the pursuit of academic and personal successes. We collaborate with faculties, offices, and services to deliver effective programming and provides leadership on university policies and initiatives to our primary customer, the student. The Office of the Dean of Students coordinates many services that strive to create diverse and inclusive support in all stages of the student experience, including: academic resources, learning and communication strategies and services, career and professional development, health & wellness services, and community resources. Simply put, we care about and want to support our students in what they need to be successful, even when they sometimes do not know themselves

**Position summary**

Under the direction of and reporting to the ASC Communication Support Coordinator, the ASL - English Interpreter will be responsible for American Sign Language (ASL) - English interpretation and transliteration for students supported by Accessibility & Accommodations Services. The Staff Interpreter is required to interpret for a diverse array of situations including classroom lectures and related academic events on campus while adhering to the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct. This position requires interpreting services to be delivered online and in person.

**Duties**
- Assumes responsibility for American Sign Language (ASL) - English interpretation for designated events and activities required by a student’s academic participation, ensuring all environmental factors are included in the interpretation of activities including, but not limited to, course-related lectures, student meetings, seminars, graduate defenses, administrative and research meetings, visiting lectures, conferences, and field research, etc.
- Prepares interpretations of videos and/or audios or English texts into ASL, as well as interprets ASL texts into spoken English and/or written text.
- Prepares for interpreting assignments by reading relevant materials, PPT presentations, video/audio materials, etc., and by working with the team interpreter, student / staff to determine optimal sign choices and best work practices.
- Maintains regular communication with the ASC Communication Support Coordinator about schedule changes.
- Regularly and accurately submits hours in HCM

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Must be a graduate of a recognized American Sign Language - English/signed language interpreter education program
- Must hold current CASLI certification (previously the Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada), or RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Certification, or have initiated the process to achieve certification
- Must hold dual membership with CASLI (the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters); RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) membership is optional
- Must be able to interpret incorporating cultural components and with superior bilingual fluency along the ASL language continuum and spoken English across disciplines and post-secondary levels (e.g., Extension, undergraduate, graduate)
- Must be coachable and willing to develop ELK (Extra Linguistic Knowledge) in post-secondary academia and culture
- Must possess a minimum of five years' experience interpreting in a post-secondary environment
