MacEwan University is seeking Interpreters for casual employment opportunities with our Student Wellness Services department. You will provide accurate, thorough, and comprehensive sign language interpreting services in a variety of assignments across campus for students, faculty, staff, and guests who are Deaf, hard-of-hearing, or deaf-blind, while remaining responsive to varying communication needs and preferences.

Key responsibilities include:

- Interpreting classroom instruction and campus-related assignments beyond the classroom (i.e., meetings, review sessions, field experiences);
- Interpreting at campus-wide events (i.e., Convocation, Speaker Series);
- Working with other interpreters to cohesively provide service in unique settings; and
- Preparing for assignments by reading course materials and reviewing course information.

This is an hourly, intermittent position and work schedules may vary each academic term depending on operational needs.

SKILLS

You will have:

- Thorough knowledge of the interpreting process;
- Demonstrated understanding of the special communication needs of Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals;
- Comprehensive understanding of Deaf Culture;
- Working knowledge of platform interpreting techniques;
- The ability to interpret effectively at a level that requires using unique terminology and language;
- The ability to effectively shift between ASL or a manual sign system to spoken English and vice versa in highly interactive situations, such as discussions, workshops, seminars, and platform settings;
- The ability to interpret difficult and complex terms, concepts, ideas, and emotions;

QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of a diploma from a recognized Interpreter Education Program.
- A minimum of 1 year interpreting experience, preferably in a post-secondary setting.
- A member in good standing with CASLI (Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters), who adheres to CASLI’s Code of Ethics.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
