**Your role**

CBC Ottawa is looking for a reporter to help us expand our coverage of climate and environmental issues in Eastern Ontario. Weather events, specifically extreme weather events, are common in the national capital region, often severely impacting our community. We’re seeking a reporter to help guide our audience through these events, providing news, context and analysis. These events, however, also have lasting impacts, ranging from the people affected to how they inform politics and the economy in our region. We need a reporter who understands these stories don’t have simple start and end points; they need to be followed long after the weather event ends.

The ability to be a clear communicator is of the utmost importance in this role. The job requires regular, sometimes daily, appearances on digital video, radio and television. An ability to provide analysis, efficiently and succinctly, both in writing and verbally is necessary in this position.
You will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, and resonate with the communities we serve.

**Key tasks**:

- Produce journalistic content for a variety of platforms including digital, radio and video.
- Gather high-quality audio and video.
- Edit material for use on all platforms.
- Provide timely analysis of weather events in Eastern Ontario and elsewhere in the province on multiple platforms.
- Report on the fallout of weather events, exploring people and policy stories.
- Arrange for, and conduct interviews.
- Contribute story ideas and creative treatments.
- Makes recommendations to assist in planning station coverage.
- An ability to report live into local radio programs/newscasts and our supper hour TV program.
- A passion for telling stories related to climate and environment is essential, with an appetite to explore the intersection of people and policy stories.
- A thorough understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
- Proven critical thinking skills and news judgment in high pressure situations.
- An excellent ability at finding stories and an understanding of why those stories should be told.
- A deep curiosity and ability to quickly soak up information.
- A comfort with radio and TV journalism or a strong desire to quickly develop those skills.
- An ability to work independently but also adept at receiving assignments and working with a variety of editors.
- An ability to be “live” during major news events is necessary.
- An understanding of the key issues facing people in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Valid driver's licence.
