**Community Service Worker—Refugee Outreach Program**

**Bloor Street United Church** is a vibrant, affirming community exploring faith, seeking justice and living with respect in creation. The church has recently left its building in order to redevelop the site to include residential condominiums, commercial office space and a new church worship, office and activity space. During this time, the congregation shares worship space with another United Church congregation and occupies a separate office location for staff operations and some program activities.

**Job Summary**:
Works under the supervision and direction of the ROP Outreach worker, to strengthen formal and informal social supports for English and Spanish speaking program participants. The Summer Student will do this by providing opportunities for program participants to meet in person and/or on-line. He/She will respond to participants current concerns and identify opportunities that support refugees and newcomers sense of belonging, build friendships and increase competence in the activities of daily living in a new country.

**Tasks and Responsibilities**:
Meets with clients and program participants to understand issues, share information and give support.

Informs and advises clients about resources and approaches to problem solving.

Plans, organizes and implements the delivery of information and social events for vulnerable groups within the program’s client population (for example: isolated seniors, new mothers, teens).

Assesses opportunities for volunteer leadership for group activities, recruits and mobilizes volunteers. In consultation with the Supervisor, identifies and provides training and support to volunteers. Supports new, volunteer ESL conversation group leaders with information and links to people and resources.

Refers clients to other social services, assists clients in researching service options and developing skills and confidence in seeking out resources. Shares skills in using and understanding on-line information resources.

Working with the Supervisor, assists families dealing with crises related to health, loss of employment, bereavement etc., through information, practical support and accompaniment.

Assists in developing evaluation plans and tools for educational and social support activities. Maintains program statistics for evaluation and monitoring purposes.

Applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age (as of the beginning of the employment period for this position: May 1, 2023).

This position is suitable for a post secondary student in a client services field such as social work, community work, social service worker, immigrant and social services worker, etc.

**Fluency in Spanish and English is required.**

**Must be eligible to work in Canada.**

**Note**: This position will be financed through the Canada Summer Student grant. Confirmation of the position and the details such as hours, duration, wage etc. will be confirmed upon receiving the grant approval in April, 2023.

Full time (35 hours per week). May 1, 2023 through August 18, 2023. We are looking for someone who can be available to work approximately two Saturdays per month, to be scheduled in coordination with the Supervisor.
