Your role

CBC North is looking for a producer based in Yellowknife to lead the station’s current affairs teams producing the noon hour show Northwind and the afternoon show Trail’s End. You will be responsible for what airs on the shows — bringing fresh ideas, sharp editorial skills and a keen understanding of audio storytelling.

You have fresh ideas and technical expertise to create the quality programming Canadians have come to expect from us. You are someone who is always ready to explore new ways of creating content that is distinct, intelligent and innovative.

You will lead and also participate in developing and producing editorial content, creative storytelling and finding great guests for the show. You have sharp editorial skills with clear news instincts and an appetite for daily journalism. You are a strong voice for journalistic excellence and stories that meet CBC’s Journalism Standards and Practices.

You are a producer who’s focused on the audience and what they need. You know how to engage new, more diverse and younger audiences familiar with digital and social media conventions and storytelling.

You are connected to or have an understanding of indigenous communities and their way of life.

You are a motivator, mentor and coach capable of developing young journalists.

You are a team player, work well with others and lead with compassion and empathy. You set the standard for collaboration with other producers and content creators.

You work with other members of the editorial team to break stories and plan longer term coverage. While your focus is radio, you communicate with other producers to ensure radio content has a home on digital and television.

Key Tasks:

- Lead the CA teams connected to the noon hour and afternoon shows.
- Conceive, research, write and produce original story ideas for current affairs that will engage and inform the audience.
- Deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
- Respond quickly to breaking news events as it unfolds.
- Deliver exclusive and enterprise material on a regular basis.
- Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
- Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop and break stories, plan features and coordinate long-term coverage.
- Communicate with other producers and leaders within the station and territories.

As a Current Affairs Producer, you will bring the following skills and experience to the CBC:

- Minimum three years recent experience in a daily news environment.
- Strong leadership skills with a flair for outside the box thinking.
- Strong journalistic skills.
- Strong audio editing and storytelling experience
- Strong reporting, presentation and broadcast writing skills.
- Strong understanding of demonstrative live storytelling techniques.
- Ability to incorporate breaking news into a live broadcast.
- Strong vetting ability.
- Ability to balance the big picture creative thinking with the “daily grind” of producing a daily current affairs (radio) program.
- Ability to assign, manage and motivate staff, coordinate with other departments in a productive manner, and mediate disputes as they arise.
- Ability to manage remote live broadcasts.
- High-level knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
- Deep knowledge of and connection to the Indigenous and equity-seeking communities across the North.
- Experience and proven ability to tell news stories in compelling and innovative ways.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong team player.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada’s insurance company..
- Ability to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends.

CBC/Radio-Canada is committed to being a leader in reflecting our country’s diversity. That’s because we can only create and tell the stories that connect Canadians, b
